Every study ever: Overworked employees are less productive. Employees who work from home are just as productive as employees who work in the office. The evidence is indisputable.Managers: I see. But I have a hunch that the complete opposite is true.

@lowqualityfacts I worked from home (WFH) for over 15 years and the bias against WFH has always been strong in weak managers. An employee should be judged on their actual work done and not some perception. I know for a fact I was more productive from home and collaboration was even better because the interactions with co-worker and management were more focused without sacrificing any comradeship. Only weak managers who cannot define the work they want done are afraid of work from home employees.

@lowqualityfacts I've been WFH almost exclusively for the past 3 years, and several times a week before that for many years. The times when face-to-face interactions are super valuable is when you join a new team. I'm in consulting, so that happens quite frequently for me. Spending some time in F2F workshops, doing some in-person kick-of / team building DOES lay a great foundation for the team's success. However, this can easily be done in a week or two and the team can revert to WFH mode.

As studies come out showing that work from home is as productive in most ways as being an office drone, something interesting about management is being revealed.People ARE just as productive at home as they are at the office. What they are not, when working at home, is uncomfortable and inconvenienced.Working at home for the upside of 3 years has shown that a lot of office work is 40 to 75% unproductive bullshit that contributes nothing to the actual work.Managers who manage by "I'm not happy until you're not happy" methodology are shitmixed now because they don't have that control they crave. It's not about productivity... it's about management seeing that you are inconvenienced for the company, and if you're inconvenienced, then you must be productive.Yes, yes, some things are more difficult when everyone works from home. That's true and it's trivial to think up examples... but that doesn't matter because the worker has more time to put on the difficult bits because they're not hauling their ass to and from an office every day.All that's happening now is that managers are finally realizing what a mountain of studies have said over the last 50 years: that an office worker is really only productive about 3 hours a day, maybe 5 for the best ones. In the office, that looks like drudgery. At home it looks like slacking... but it's just how the game is played.

@lowqualityfacts office staff @ co I work for all switched to WFH during lockdown. We had a very productive couple of yrs. Things started to open up again but ppl (including me who previously was not an advocate) were in no rush to return. Then new CEO visits 1 of our now sparsely occupied sites & suddenly proclaims we need to go in at least 3x/week - just because his ego was bruised. "I worked 36 hours straight with no sleep"....um, great, so you basically worked 8-10 productive hours and a whole bunch of error-filled, addlepated hours...which depending on your position might have lethal consequences for other people....good...job? đ¤Ś

@lowqualityfacts Ours actually had pre existing policy behind it: our workplace has a "no side hustle" policy forbidding staff from taking a 2nd job that imposes on our work in any way. They ended remote work out of fear of overemployment (the practice of adopting two full time remote work positions or more from different employers, then doing marginal to frequently disrupted work in order to collect two full time checks.)Of course, there is nothing really stopping employees from doing that anyways. Unless you like the other job more, when there is a tie, just risk getting fired from Job #2 over the current one.

@lowqualityfacts The office is dying such a fun death, and I fan the flames whenever I can.No one should be sentenced to sit next to Carol from Accounting 8 hours a day until they retire, putting up with her silent but violent beer farts.

@lowqualityfacts I think managers are afraid that accepting the idea that employees don't need someone constantly hounding them to be productive will threaten their job security. If they don't need to be managed, what's a manager for?

@lowqualityfacts this is also why Kanban, Kaizen, Agile, and so on are popularly-believed not to "work": because *all* of them absolutely require management to have very sturdy discipline: they *must* trust the workers, usually over the manager's own judgement.Guess how many managers and executive leaders are prepared to actually engage with work this way?

@lowqualityfacts The problem is that the wrong people are always getting promoted to manager. They tend to be, authoritarian, narcissistic and incompetent. As authoritarians they need to have people close enough so that they can stand over them. In my parents day they were called "little Hitlers". You don't seem to hear that term much nowadays. I suspect it will be coming back though, with the rise of fascism around the world.

@lowqualityfacts The same is true of kids. The country whose educ'n system has consistently been the best in the world is Finland. Apart from requiring every teacher to have a min. masters degree, they also have no homework whatsoever, &the school day is shorter. All of their strategies result in students who love learning, love coming to school & end up with optimum grades. But do other Western countries take notice, no. Because DA POS politicians are also affected by the DunningKruger Effect

@lowqualityfacts "Overworked employees are less productive. Employees who work from home are just as productive as employees who work in the office" These are not indisputable, they are two contradictory statements. @lowqualityfacts To be fair, remote working doesn't work for everyone. Just like working in an office might not work for everyone either. Thinking that remote working is a "catch all" solution is as bad as thinking that work needs to be done 100% of the time face-to-face.

@lowqualityfacts Much of this has to do with not understanding what their employees do. I was responsible for doing data entry for employees in several different locations, which included chasing them down when their forms were incomplete. This involved around 40 people, with interns added to the mix regularly. And they kept piling on more jobs.
