Remember, we're ACCURATELY EMULATING CASSETTE SPEEDS, folks. That means you could spend up to 10 minutes letting these little guys load in. Some of the C64 games had stuff like mini-games, graphics and more while you waited, so get ready to waste some time in the most exquisite ways.

@textfiles I want to know what this means. Are there cassette players that connect to a computer? Obviously I don't expect an answer if it would take too long. Sorry, not a tech person but I still want to know.

@BernieWonIowa There used to be cassettes that connected to a computer to allow loading and saving of programs; these are commercial versions of said programs that thrived in the early 1980s.

They had come up with a way of storing data in cassette tapes? Wow! I knew about the βtape backupsβ that would happen on a periodic basis but those were at a server level. I guess the principle is the same?

@Deus @Traumavore Here's a good overview:https://wav-prg.sourceforge.io/tape.htmlThere are others, if you want to dig deep. But the throughput of this will make you really amused. In modern era, people have taken the data off cassettes and put them into a .TAP or similar format, which is JUST the data, so it can load faster. I chose it to stay old-school slow.

@BernieWonIowa @textfiles @davoloid Perhaps not in the 8 track audio format you're thinking of (although there's no reason one couldn't they can store audio, just like a cassette), but the QIC (Quarter-inch tape cartridge) form had a format called QIC Mammoth, introduced in 1972. I believe QIC-80 had 28 tracks, and about 80MB capacity on a quarter inch tape. I just recently got around to dumping all my old QIC tapes from the 80s and early 90s to bluray disc. So, sure, multitrack recording was certainly a thing. Oh, wait, Tandberg had an 8 track reel-to-reel tape. I know we were using 9 track reel-to-reel back in the day. Much of this starts to fade from my memory as fast as wrinkles creep in! ;)

@BernieWonIowa @ladyparabellum @davoloid Imagine the long strip of tape inside a cassette. It is sprinkled with metal on top of plastic to take the signal. The "head" (recording/playing part) can turn on and off up and down the tape as it goes by, in sections. Each one is a track. 8 track had 4 stereo-music tracks on a tape.
