The lessons we take from the Holocaust have to be taken in totality. It’s not enough to say “this thing is similar to what happened in 1932” unless we also examine the factors that enabled it, the factors that intersected with it.

I wrote myself how Nazis used what we recognize today as homosexuality and transsexuality in order to grow their power. But it’s also critical to remember that this was not in a vacuum. They didn’t hate queer people *only* because they hated queer people; they hated queer people *also* because it helped them justify their hatred of Jews.

You can’t remove antisemitism from this discussion. It’s an integral part of it.When the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft’s archives were raided, it was part of Die Aktion gegen den undeutschen Geist. This was organized by the Deutsche Studentenschaft. That action took place in a larger context, and that context was principally antisemitism.

The DSS wrote that their number one enemy was the Jew, and Hirschfeld’s works were burned alongside the works of other Jewish scholars, thinkers, and researchers, including Freud.

It’s a little uncomfortable to me to keep saying trans people were first, though I’ve made this mistaken claim myself in the past. It’s more correct to say they were among the first, but the common thread of what connected who was first targeted was above all else Judaism

The leadup to the Nazi era and the Holocaust had a lot of other factors: a hatred of communism, also intertwined with antisemitism, and a powerful Stalinist political bloc, were among the other factors.

It makes me uncomfortable when we talk about transphobia today in the terms of the Holocaust or even early Nazi era because we’re taking one part that is similar and discarding all of the things that are attached to that. Including the absence of factors that could have mitigated it.

It tends to view the Holocaust through purely modern eyes, and risks losing what we might now refer to as an intersectional lens of who the Nazis targeted and why. That’s a bit dangerous.

There are comparisons, of course. But we can’t take the comparisons alone without taking the whole thing. If only because losing sight of the bigger picture can risk us losing sight of ways to stop it.

It might be that the thing we need to stop to prevent things from getting worse is an entirely different thing, not on our radar. Like if train a and b are going to collide at the junction, you can stop both train a or train b to avoid that. Don’t just try to stop one of them.

@hyenagirl64 i don’t think we should be comparing to any genocides. I think we should be comparing to civil rights struggles.

@hyenagirl64 far more to compare to the Irish fight for abortion rights than to the Uyghur situation

@niedlichenacktschnecke @emilygorcenski There's a war going on in Europe right now, and the Nazis are invading, raping and killing.

@emilygorcenski @niedlichenacktschnecke So i agree that one has to look at the whole ideological package of the nazis, but even more at the specific historical circumstances. So: Which historical circumstances are a better comparison to today?
