following up on Meta joining the fediverse, I agree we have to resoundingly reject them.Google and Facebook destroyed adoption of XMPP with the embrace, extend, and extinguish strategy. Now I need 8 different chat apps to talk to all my friends.

@kvuzet They are monopolies; they will do everything they can to absorb anything else and raise costs to everyone else. This means that only their partners interact with them, and you get the same system that set up a Big Six in media (and every other industry, given time).In addition, it is simple math. If Meta has 2.8 billion users, and then joins the #Fediverse, that means that the few million of us will become rarities.

mastodon dot social will of course not reject them and will probably post some cringe "welcome to the fediverse" shit when it launches. I understand we probably cant stop it from happening, but we have to figure out how to make the fediverse resilient enough to survive an attempt at big tech appropriation/destruction.It's in these companies DNA to destroy open standards based technology solutions. They'll try to kill this like they killed RSS and XMPP because that will mean locking people back inside the walled garden, where they can harvest every possible bit of data to sell to advertisers.

@kvuzet Without the walled garden, they fear that they will have no monopoly.Obviously they do not study patterns, because even without lock-in people choose Windows and Android over more complex options.

@kvuzet I agree with the reasoning, however, I don’t know if we can massively be sensitive towards people that way (except people who are already aware about that and care for this).There is another reason that will impact people : we care about privacy, and we would lose it by communicating with them (like messaging e-mails with fellows at Google). I know many don’t care for that either, but awareness rises and it’s documented.Of course, we can combine both as a statement :)

@kvuzet @4bz I don't understand why you'd federate with Meta for 'the reach'. Everyone left Facebook for a reason. If people wanted to share their social media profiles with their crazy reactionary aunties, they could have just stayed on Facebook.

@FinalOverdrive @kvuzet XMPP is still alive though. Conversations, the popular client on android is pretty nice, as well as @dino, the Linux desktop client. I recently was at my PC, when someone called me via XMPP and I could choose, whether to accept the video call on my PC or my smartphone. I am extremely satisfied with this current state of the XMPP ecosystem and the possibilities of self-hosting.#xmpp #dino #conversations

@kvuzet Chiming in to say I'm using the same setup. I'm on the conversations.im server and my friend is too. Conversations to Conversations calling works OK, Conversations to Dino also. I guess I avoid many problems by just being on the same server.

@art4857 @kvuzet yeah xmpp FTW but imagine how far we could have been if big corpo would not ruin it first. I think defederaring those scumbag is a must.
