@j I like dogs, but I respect cats because they haven't evolved subservience. Example, I had a housemate who didn't really like our cats. Shir Khan was a big, muscular, standard-issue cat. Total sweetheart, but an absolute fiend for pineapple off a Hawaiian pizza. Housemate didn't like pineapple, so one night he picked it off his slice and made of show of it in front of Shir Khan to throw it in the trash. For the next week, housemate found a turd on his pillow like a hotel chocolate.

@moliver @j Oh yeah, this is a well-studied area. Dogs are way smarter than cats, but have evolved to be submissive to humans, as their best chance of survival.By comparison, cats have a very limited repertoire of behaviors. This argument has been going on for hundreds of years. The reason cats have limited trainabilty, isn't because they're smart, it's because they don't know what the f*ck you're talking about. 🤣

Yeah that was fast, wasn't it? From a scientific perspective, this subject is settled.Canines are way smarter than felines. Fact. You can insult me all day long, it doesn't matter to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@gme @j @moliver Cat owners are just really evangelical abour their cats. It's weird. And most of them are American. The British are under no illusions about the intellectual limitations of their pets.We had to change all our door handles for knobs, knowing that our dog, Jake - an 8st Akita, German Shepard cross - could open doors. He'd figured it out.But going down stairs when his back legs started to fail (the German Shep gene)? He fell down them, every time. Any human would recognized it.

@BarrenPlanet @gme @j Every cat I've owned has figured out handle doorknobs. One even persisted enough to turn the round ones too. It's not that cats don't understand what people say. They just don't care to obey.

@moliver @gme @j Oh hey, I have a good relationship with the local cats. I've nothing against them, and the feeling is mutual. There's one that visits often, despite us not feeding it, purely for scratches.Cats in the UK are semi-wild and free-roaming.

@BarrenPlanet @gme @j And this is why cats are smarter. Domestic dogs are captives and dependent on their owners. Cats can work a whole neighborhood for scritches and treats.

@gme @j@janxy.town @moliver@pleistocene.social They both blocked me for showing them the hard evidence that dogs are smarter than cats. 🤣The thing is that cats - being only semi-domesticated - are more self-sufficient. If that's a quality you happen to admire in a person, then you can anthropomorphize and project that onto your pet.But independence isn't a scientific criterion for intelligence. Canines have far broader behavioral repertoires, and more sophisticated problem-solving skills. It ain't even close.
