@js @dave Uh … my GUIDs are somehow messed up. And I'm not sure if that's on OP3's side or Podcast Index's.According to OP3, The Audacity to Podcast's GUID is 6fe9fe24-c1aa-51c7-b1a4-51538e20c9ad.But no, that's the GUID for my video feed, Podcasting Videos by The Audacity to Podcast.

@theDanielJLewis @janagyjr I disagree. It's quite simple, really. With examples: https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace/blob/main/docs/1.0.md#guidincluding links to tools and resources to calculate the GUID for your feed URL.

@mikeneumann @theDanielJLewis so it's like a hash. What is the mathematical likelihood of two separate podcasts having the same GUID? (and this is a problem for hashes, it's why password crackers attack the hash).

@janagyjr @mikeneumann @theDanielJLewis The likelihood is so close to zero as to be impossible, because the sha1 that determines it is seeded with a namespace value which reduces the collision set into the millions, which is nothing in hash algo terms.

@dave @mikeneumann @theDanielJLewis And yet hash attacks on passwords are still successful. Rainbow tables still work and passwords (hopefully) use something better than sha1 to make the hash.

@theDanielJLewis @dave I seea podcast:guid of 6fe9fe24-c1aa-51c7-b1a4-51538e20c9ad declared in the feed https://feeds.podcastmirror.com/theaudacitytopodcastSeems right to me?Remember the feed is the source of truth - you need to stick something globally unique in there.Dave is generating a placeholder value as a bootstrap. You can use the uuidv5 algo (nice because it's deterministic), or a "classic" v4 guid if that's easier for you.Important that it's unique, stable and unchanging forever across hosting changes

@js @dave Oh noes. I have a feeling that's a PowerPress problem. Even though I have PowerPress set to use PodcastMirror.com, I now suspect PowerPress generated that GUID from the PowerPress feed URL instead of using the GUID that already existed for my podcast, or using the Podcast Mirror URL.And PowerPress doesn't let me change the GUID.@Todd_Blubrry, @mgdell, or @Lehmancreations, any thoughts?

@theDanielJLewis @js @Todd_Blubrry @mgdell @Lehmancreations The GUID is a one way sha1 hash so it doesn't go the other way. The idea is that it is born once in the feed and lives forever as you travel across hosts and platforms. As long as the GUID doesn't change as the feed moves, the world always knows it's you. Like a feed fingerprint.

@Todd_Blubrry @theDanielJLewis @js @dave @mgdell there needs to be a way for pp to not put it in. The idea is that a podcast always has the same guid if they change feed hosts. And if a podcast already has a guid pp shouldn’t generate a new one

@Lehmancreations @theDanielJLewis @js @dave @mgdell A normal podcaster will never know what their GUID is! If we import a show with a guid we will set it in PP and in the Blubrry Dashboard. Otherwise, a PP user will have it set. This is not something we can allow to be changed or manipulated with.

@Lehmancreations @Todd_Blubrry @js @dave @mgdell I'm guessing there's a field in my database I can set to fix the GUID manually. The potential problem I'm seeing with PowerPress is that PP could be setting the GUID from the PowerPress feed URL (/feed/podcast) instead of the Podcast Mirror URL, or completely ignoring if there was already a GUID in Podcast Index. In my case, I have two podcast channel feeds from PP using the same GUID: …

@dave @Lehmancreations @Todd_Blubrry @js @mgdell That's exactly why I'm raising them! And I figured out what my GUID is representing! It's actually my sitewide feed: theaudacitytopodcast.com/feed. So I don't know why PowerPress used that instead of the PowerPress default feed or especially my separate video "channel" feed.(I'm using Podcast Channels in PP for this site, not Category Podcasting.)

@Lehmancreations @dave @Todd_Blubrry @js @mgdell So now I'm wondering whether I _should_ change the GUID, which one, and which feed I should use.And wouldn't Podcast Index have already generated a GUID for me before PowerPress did? These are issues no podcaster should have to think about or try to fix. I don't mind working through them, but I hope others don't run into these problems, too.

@theDanielJLewis @dave @Todd_Blubrry @js @mgdell yeah I don’t mind it either but other podcasters should have to. I think Podcast index takes the idea feed is source of truth so it would replace guid in index with what is in the feed.

@dave @Lehmancreations @Todd_Blubrry @js @mgdell Here's an interesting followup.PP apparently never set the GUID for my second channel feed. I went into settings for that channel, updated my copyright year, saved, and then that feed had a new GUID, now separate from the main podcast feed. It's still, surprisingly, using the /feed/video feed URL directly from PowerPress instead of the Podcast Mirror URL PP is set to use for that feed. But the actual value to generate doesn't matter, right?

@dave @Lehmancreations @Todd_Blubrry @js @mgdell A followup to this.A recent PowerPress update apparently "fixed" this, but I think it also regenerated by GUIDs—at least from the proper channel URLs this time (but not from the Podcast Mirror URLs).So that means my feed has yet another different GUID again.
