Hey random #trans #ally I thought I'd share a bit of info a lot of #cis folks have found confusing but are unsure how to approach or even form into a question. The reason folks ask for pronouns, not "what gender are you" isn't just because pronouns don't always map to gender in the way you'd think, but it's because it's kind of a personal and complicated question that they may not want to discuss or may not be fully sure about themselves. You do need to know someone's pronouns, though, to properly talk about them, so that's the actual information you need.In almost all situations, you shouldn't need to know their gender. If you're unsure and think situations you're in might need their gender, bring up the situation first (like say, would someone who uses she/her or they/them pronouns feel comfortable accepting an award for femmes/women/etc) because really what matters there isn't their gender! It's their comfort. That being said, if someone wants to talk about gender, that means they trust you. Awesome!

@deilann pfffffff you'd think that but I've almost never seen anyone use my proper pronouns without me directly prompting them to.
