@silhouette Mikrotik are neat when the manhours are cheap. My home is currently all Mikrotik, RB4011 router, CRS326 switch and Audience for tri-band WiFi

@silhouette I wish Mikrotik would release some decent speed WiFi 6 though.I mostly use the Audience because it's one of their very few products with a 5GHz data rate higher than 857 Mbit/s. The Audience's 1733 Mbit/s data rate gives me real-world speeds of about 300-450 Mbit depending on number of devices connected.Like always their WiFi 6 products are really late out and "Upgrading" from 1733 Mbit WiFi 5 to 1200 Mbit WiFi 6 would probably at best give me the same performance I already have.

@quad @silhouette i want to get off mr mikrotik's wild ride tbheven though i learned more about it i still want to a) have more open systems like OpenWRT b) separate roles so that wifi AP is separate from router/NAT c) learn more about networks in general

@hj @silhouette I mean let's be honest, Mikrotik mainly gives cheap hardware. Their software is jank af.RouterOS is decent for a software routing, but everything else like switching and wifi is hacked onto it rather poorly it seems.Personally I plan to switch my router back to OPNsense once I get a rack shelf for my OPNsense box. Mikrotik are also really testing my patience when it comes to waiting for actually fast WiFi 6 land. All the WiFi 6 they have seems slow as shit

@quad @silhouette idk, i think the router i have was on the expensive side, compared to your average d-link consumer wifi router, and I think it was the only consumer-like mikrotik at the time, the rest was either just board or rack-mount type of thing and even more expensive.Despite being a communications engineer by education I know jack shit about computer networks, really....i do know how SECAM works tho... mostly.

@hj @silhouette Mikrotik hardware is dirt cheap when comparing stuff with actual pro features available.Comparing Mikrotik with a consumer thing that has OpenWRT hacked onto it isn't exactly comparing apples-to-apples as D-link or whoever doesn't officially support or maintain it.Mikrotik's hAP series has gotten decently expansive in the last couple years, but their WiFi is still lacking for home use. That said, WiFi is hard. A Mikrotik AP with a data rate of 867 Mbit will often beat a consumer WiFi AP with a rate of 1300 Mbit into the floor because the implementation is better. But where Mikrotik sells a 1200 Mbit WiFi 6 AP, competitors like Ubiquiti sell you one rated at 1500 Mbit or higher instead with just as good an implementation. And higher end options at least /exist/ if you want them (Which I do).Mikrotik simply has no alternative in their product range to something like the U6-Pro
