Roman roads have lasted for over 2000 years with some still being used today

@shaman meanwhile, in my city... This was all done about 25 years ago. Sometimes before elections they'll throw a thin layer of asphalt on the streets and call it a day (as you can see by the nearly non-existent curb hovering an inch over the asphalt).

@shaman Okay. Except for the roads, what have the romans ever done for us?

@shaman Near our home here outside of Cologne there is a stretch of Roman road that has been covered with tarmac and concrete several times. The modern covering failed after a few years and where it is still there, it‘s full of potholes and cracks. The original Roman road is still undamaged and fully functional.

@khoji @shaman I think the same holds for Roman lime-based cement. The main problem being that "repairing" it with Portland cement can trap water inside and degrade any lime-based cement or render.

@davep @shaman Also, the Romans didn’t include iron reinforcement in their cement, which combines the addition of tensile strength with a pre-programmed limited service life.

@khoji @shaman I think Portland cement also has a limited service life of its own (100 years?)

@khoji @davep @shaman But the roman roads are not smooth, so driving at modern speeds on them (whether by car or bicycle) is probably uncomfortable (just guessing, I only have experience with cobblestone).Note that motorways covered in concrete IIRC last much longers that the ones with modern aggregate, but they induce more vibrations and are therefore more noisy. So roads are like Jeans: either pure cotton, chafing and durable, or mixed with elastane, comfy and wearing out in a few years.

@shaman The Roman occupation bequeathed a great road system to the Anglo -Saxons. The Romans built many cities and forts that in time became English cities. The Romans never invaded Ireland. Thus the Irish remained a rural nation without cities, or reliable roads. I was surprised to learn that Dublin was built by Viking invaders.

@shaman And didn't have to carry the weight of tousands trucks every day. Modern roads are purposefully built so that the top layer can be easily replaced.

@shaman looks like the remnants of the Via Appia. That top surface is not original, but still ancient. Via Appia is deteriorating badly and there is a now a restoration project from Rome to Brindisi
