I'm beginning to think that I'm the only person on earth who cares that the widely quoted "100 million people using ChatGPT" number is likely to be hugely over-inflated (or at least was at the time that number was first shared)It came from a company that tracks analytics through dodgy browser extensions!I trust the 30m user that was leaked to Kevin Roose at the start of February by "two people with knowledge of the figures" a lot more: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/03/technology/chatgpt-openai-artificial-intelligence.html

@simon I just assumed they'd asked ChatGPT how many people were using it, and blindly quoted the response.

@simon This is sort of the current AI hype cycle in a nutshell. The amount of unnecessary hype around AI is strange because ... there's actual substance! 30M people is still a very high number!
