Ron Filipkowski 🇺🇦At the risk of sounding “woke,” I will just point out that any discussion about raising the Social Security age to 70 should start with the fact that the average life expectancy of black men who pay into it their whole lives is 68.

@Tilopa If necessary, the way to raise the retirement age would be to raise the age only for payments based on the higher wage tiers of payroll contributions. That way, people whose careers were at lower wages, and likely to ahave shorter life expectancy, would not have their retirement age raised.

@Tilopa it's an entitlement program ... as in, politicians act entitled to pick and choose societys winners and losers. By the way, you can't collect SS until your 133, wise guy!!! See how that works!!!

@Tilopa I'm a Canadian, and retired at age 61, earlier than the normal 65 here. I'm glad I can't even imagine what you're saying here. Wow.

@Tilopa There's a line in here about the absurdity of telling working class folks that they can never retire because white collar professionals are living longer.https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/28/opinion/social-security-retirement-age.html

@Tilopa You got me looking up this data (it’s been awhile since I looked at Vital Statistics data). Here’s a great article that shows health and life expectancy discrepancies by race and ethnicity. Life expectancy gotten so much worse over just a 1 year period 2019-2022. Health outcomes have only improved for Asians (we have something to learn there). https://www.kff.org/report-section/key-facts-on-health-and-health-care-by-race-and-ethnicity-health-status-outcomes-and-behaviors/

@Tilopa No it's not. In 2018 the life expectancy for black Americans was 75, and the gender gap is not 14 years. There's a white-black gap but it was steadily shrinking right up until corona, down to 3.6 years in the 2010s. In 2020 the gap widened because of corona and then it shrank again, since anti-vax attitudes are mostly partisan Republican and black people don't vote Republican. @TilopaAnd as life expectancy drops in general, we should be talking about lowering retirement to 60 or 62 as in Europe. Not raising retirement age. @MammalAmongMammals

@Tilopa A lot of people are confused about the concept of "life expectancy at birth". Higher infant mortality (due to lack of universal health care) and higher mortality as young adults depress average life expectancy for black males. If you've made it to 60 your life expectancy will be years higher than "life expectancy at birth" for your group. For example, in 2015 in the United States a black male aged 65 could expect to live on average until 81.4 vs. 83 for whites.

@Tilopa #SocialSecurity is paid for by #workers and is solvent.#RichPeople want to raise the #retirement age so they can extract more #labor out of workers, not because there's a problem with Social Security.

@Tilopa According to Glasgow Centre for Population Health: In the period 2008-2012, male life expectancy at birth was estimated by GCPH to be 67.8 years in Carlton&Bridgeton, while female life expectancy was estimated at 76.6 years.

@gretared @Tilopa To have a higher retirement age, we would need to start with employers being willing to retain and hire workers over 55-60.

@Tilopa not disputing race issue but also people who do physical labor burn out younger, deserve an earlier retirement than professionals whose work is less physically taxing

@Alon @Tilopa Fair enough. Of course living past 68 doesn’t mean you will be able to work and get paid. How about we raise the cap on earnings to put more money into social security instead of trying to force people to work longer.
