Hi #IT Mastodon. A plea for help. Like probably all of us, I have way too many old backup drives. I recently came across a 7-yr old LaCie drive I'd not spun up in five years. It's got a decade or more of old laptop TimeMachine backups on it. But of course, it didn't spin up. So I sent it to a recovery service. That's where this story takes a turn. ... 1/2

I sent it to the company LaCie said was accredited to do recovery, called "Secure Data Recovery." After they got the drive, the did "diagnostics" then told me to get the data back, it'd cost a minimum of $4K. The drive was not damaged, just refused to spin up. I'm stunned. But my question is this: Do I trust them, do I turn to a new service? Any tips?

@Jbat sounds reasonable to me; can't tell if they'll have to damage the drive to get it to spin up, or whether is already damaged, until they succeed in spinning up it. The price is in the normal range.
