Great read:https://ploum.net/2023-03-09-losing-signal.html> #Signal published a blog post on how we were all different and they were trying to adapt to those differences. Signal was for everyone, told the title. Ironically, that very same day, I’ve lost access to my account.> I’ve suddenly been excluded from all the conversations with my friends because I very slightly but unacceptably deviated from the norm.> 3yrs ago, I thought having a black and white screen on my own phone was more comfortable for my eyes.

@rysiek This person appears to have used Signal from F-droid + the Aurora store. These aren't developed/maintained by Signal, and we can't vouch for them. They are not official Signal clients. We can help troubleshoot the issue with the official Signal APK, which appear to be related to the registration process, but they would need to get in touch with us to do this.

@Mer__edith @rysiek : I’ve sent two different support requests 48h ago. One by mail, one from a support form.As soon as I hit the first problem, I ensured that I was using the official apk downloaded from signal.org(the one provided on Aurora is, by definition, the one provided on the Google Play Store and the one I’ve been using for years). As pointed in https://mastodon.social/@z3r0fox/109984229087433207 it seems there’s a problem in your registration process and the problem is independent from the client.

@ploum @rysiek Yes, looks like a registration problem. Thanks for confirming. I'll connect with the support team and make sure they're aware.

@rysiek I mean, I have been pushing #Threema for years. I started using it ~15 (Fukk, am I old?) years ago, when it was still in #beta, if memory serves. It never really took off outside of the paranoid, #security conscious, IT crowd, but maybe now more people will start gravitating towards it...I mean, they literally have (for #Android, anyway) an app that they guide you how to install without using #Google or the #PlayStore, so that you don't trigger #trackers and #analytics.Edit: Adding link to Threema Librehttps://threema.ch/en/blog/posts/threema-libre

@justice_dazzle @rysiek except threema has the very same fault signal does: it is a centralised service with a signle entity dictating who gets to use it and who doesn't. I thought that was the point of this article.

@rysiek It seems we're losing email as universal communication medium. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft email servers have been randomly and quietly rejecting emails from smaller hosts for a while now.I have one of my servers send uptime emails regularly to a Yahoo account. It has worked for over 5 years until it suddenly started being rejected by Yahoo's servers early this year.Error message: "Messages from * temporarily deferred due to unexpected volume or user complaints"

@georgeeyong @rysiek that's funny because I blocked all microsoft-operated mail services from my mail server because of a high volume of spam

@ansuz no, see, it's only spam if it comes from self-hosted e-mail systems. It's right there in the name:Self-hosted Presumably Advertising Mailsystem. SPAM.:blobcatthinksmart: @georgeeyong

@rysiek @ansuz @georgeeyong : when it comes from a big server, it’s not spam. It’s called "mailing".And if people have business cards and a tie, they are not spammers, they are "marketing specialists".

@rysiek Can I do a shoutout for messaging on XMPP Jabber?I know it's not the easiest thing to sign up on historically, but there are people working on this like @joinjabber and @snikket_im Once you're signed up, it works well. The JoinJabber website is still in its early days, but it seems very promising:https://joinjabber.org#XMPP #Jabber

@FediThing having deployed and administered five different XMPP servers over the years, I've been skeptical regarding it's possible mainstream appeal. But over the last ~2years I have to admit it's been getting a bit better, mainly in the sense of standardizing the expected set of XEPs to be implemented by servers and clients, to avoid the compatibility matrix hell. So there is hope.I am still weary of the bolted-on end-to-end encryption, though. 👀 @joinjabber @snikket_im

@FediThing @joinjabber @snikket_im Hey @rysiek, what do you mean "bolted-on end-to-end encryption"? If you don't mind giving some more details

@pep XMPP is not a protocol that has end-to-end encryption built-in. End-to-end encryption is added on top of it. in other words, there is a way of using XMPP *without* end-to-end encryption. And that means that all sorts of edge-cases and downgrade attacks have to be considered possible.@FediThing @joinjabber @snikket_im

@rysiek @signalapp always loved people with ungoogled phones... this nonsense comes from *checks notes* 2013https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues/127
