Hi everyone. I'm a n00b at ordering surface mount parts. I ordered 0402 packages when I should have ordered 0402 packages. The difference? One of them is metic, the other is not.KiCAD didn't specify, and I didn't know to check. So many of the parts I ordered were completely wrong. Now I get to go back and pick out different parts for this project.Silver lining: I also have to do this for another project that I built a BOM for, but didn't order yet.Pic has a US dime to the left for scale.

@devsecfranklin I didn't design the board, but I ordered the parts. Now I'm looking for imperial 0402s, checking the data sheets, and using the measure tool in KiCAD to check everything more closely.

double silver lining: the correct parts are 2.54 times larger than what I was trying to work with.

@adam Those are some small parts.I dislike going smaller than 0805 if I can avoid it. (I'll use 0603, but that's where I start working with a microscope.)If you have calipers you could check the PCB for fit. Remember that the names are in hundredths of inches.

@johnlogic Thanks. Are there any other beginner mistakes that I should watch out for?I knew to make sure I'm not getting the wrong voltage, wattage, or current limits, but I didn't see the ambiguous package numbers coming.

@adam you're welcome! (We all start newbies!)Component engineering is a science of its own; start by matching "form, fit, and function".Before applying power to a circuit (esp. for the first time), wear safety glasses. Backward tantalum caps will explode, and there are a few other hazards even at low voltages. If I can help you learn, please ask/DM.

@adam The metric vs imperial SMD order is almost a rite of passage in PCB design. You aren't alone.

@adam I am slowly moving over to SMD since more and more parts are impossible to find as THT. How are you soldering? I made a small hotplate and reworked a small toaster oven for larger parts. I am getting closer to giving in and buying a digital microscope. 69 year old eyes do not do well with tiny stuff anymore. Oh and then familial tremor is more of a problem as I age A shot of booze though and I'm steady. Only one as more makes me clumsy.

@Nerb I borrowed a heat gun to do the soldering and then a microscope to be able to check the solder joints. If I decide to make a bunch of these, I will see if I can use a fellow hacker's soldering oven. (He has one at work and another at home!)I'm keeping an eye on freecycle for a toaster oven or hot plate of my own, too.

@adam I have a rework station heat gun but found it tends to blow small parts no matter how careful I am. If you buy a Chinese device from Amazon make sure you go though it. I found a few issues with mine but afterwards it has worked well. The hotplates are fairly easy to make, My first was a upside down iron. Worked but the mass made cool down difficult.

I put on the components that I do have. It's not very pretty, but the joints all looked okay under the microscope. #signet#hardware #PasswordManager #FOSS #OpenSource

@Nerb I was worried about them blowing away, but the solder paste, low blower, high heat, and strategic angles seem to have served me well so far.

@adam Here is one of my boards. I used the hotplate for one side and the hot air gun on the other side. Its a replacement for my wife's eBike power switch. The original failed after a few weeks and the 2 replacements did similar. Then they sent a jumper harness and suggested I use it to disconnect the battery when needed. So I designed my own. It's been on her bike since late last year and holding up fine. Osh Park 2 oz copper board and parts on both sides.Ended up using the hot air gun on the other side . I know people have used the reflow ovens to do them but my attempts did not work so well. Nice being able to design our own stuff. Most of mine is useless microcontroller type stuff but that is fun to play with.

@adam I mostly use ATtiny THT for projects. Amazed you successfully soldered all the tiny leads on that package with hot air.Is a digital microscope on your wish list too?

@NerbI'm able to borrow one from a fellow hacker for now.I'll probably eventually get a digital microscope of my own, but honestly, the zoom on my cell phone (Pixel 4a) camera is actually really good for this. Since I can make the lighting be excellent, things come out nice and sharp.Biggest problem with both the scope and the camera is my shaky hands. 😅

@adam Essential tremor? If you are allowed to a shot or a single beer or small glass of wine calms those down. There are medications too that might he;p but probably cause all sorts of other problem. I also facet and found the tremors get worse if I am trying to control them. Good excuse to pause and have a beer .It runs in my dads side of the family so ours is called familial tremor.
