You can only get to Gab via their web client. The Mastodon API exists, and Gab’s client used it, but you can’t get an access token.

He misunderstood how federation works and was speaking theoretically. It isn’t a resource hog, they just didn’t like what they’d see.

Well, Gab was connected to a few relays which caused it to handle way more federated posts than its users were actually interested in. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually made a difference federation-wise.
