How did Windows & MS-DOS ever take hold?Windows 3.1 is absolutely shambolic in terms of an GUI OS. MS-DOS pales in comparison to Linux.Amiga OS and Mac OS were far better options during the early Windows era. Both had some form of multitasking (Amiga did), intuitive design, not hampered by obscure drivers on multiple floppies...This 486 laptop is absolutely paralysed by a lack of software due to a non working floppy. Is there a way I can create a hard disk file on modern Windows for it?!

@richardtroupe on GNU/Linux I'd have said mtools or maybe qemu-nbd, but Windows…From VirtualBox maybe? You can either install from floppies inside vbox, or use existing images, but then you need to convert the VDI to a raw file… oddly there is a 'vboxmanage internalcommands convertfromraw' command, but not the other way round.qemu-img can do it though, not sure it's available on Windows.

@richardtroupe oh actually the other way is less obscure than I thought:https://gioacchinolonardo.medium.com/convert-vdi-virtualbox-to-raw-in-windows-c96bded29640clonehd 🙂

@richardtroupe seems diskpart can create images but only as vhd or vhdx format…

@mmu_man it's so much easier on the Amiga front. 😂I'll have to explore QEMU again as I used it to set up my Mac G3 a few years ago.

@richardtroupe it's so much easier on any sane OS…On Linux you'd just dd a blank image, use mtools to format it and put files into it…Still, Windows has made a lot of progress in terms of standardization, command-line options and documentation, wrt like, 15 years ago…

@richardtroupe like, I had to look at PowerShell today, and well, it's quite verbose and not all consistent, it kinda has some interesting ideas (some resembling ones I had like 10 years ago but eh 🙂 )

@mmu_man Yeah, I must admit that I've never gotten down and dirty with Windows like I have with other OSes. I'm not a software engineer by any stretch (fire service and education is my trade) but Windows made everything really difficult until Windows 98 and XP.In fact, XP was probably one of their best releases in terms of support and just 'working'.

@richardtroupe I completely stopped using it after XP. I still have the XP in a VM somewhere just in case…But sometimes I have to help people using it…

@mmu_man Hah! And here you are helping me with finding a modern solution to creating a hard disk file for a shitty OS from the early to mid 90s.I can say one thing... My brief dalliance with Linux via Linux Mint and Raspberry Pi has been very intuitive. I can't say the same about early Windows.

@mmu_man @richardtroupe Powershell is a much better scripting language than it is a shell. The syntax, and extremely aggressive type inference, are a little frustrating, but pipelining with objects is pretty great, and makes for still the best interaction with csv files in any language I’ve tried. Then on the other end full .NET access means you can do some absolutely ridiculous things like GUIs and even web servers (yes I have implemented a basic webserver in pure powershell lol)
