Here's a fun observation:I've run into several European Mastodon folks who lead me to believe an interesting barrier to adoption of heat pumps over there will be previously long-held beliefs that air conditioning is a horribly wasteful American thing, and getting a heat pump is a slippery slope to making air conditioning mainstream

@TechConnectify as someone who lives in the US I want to reassure them that I've never heard of a heat pump before today meaning it's not wasteful enough to be much of a thing over here--aka it's different from AC and will not lead to them becoming more like us

@mergerg No, an air conditioner is a heat pump. We use the term "heat pump" to mean the same exact technology but which can be reversed to bring heat energy from outside to inside.

@TechConnectify@mas.to @mergerg@tech.lgbt I live on the east coast, I have never seen a house without a heat pump. it's just expected to be in every single house over here. it's kinda lame that we can't get window units that could both heat and cool, it's obvious yet nobody does it

In the interest of science and community, let me break this down for you:Heat pumps are the most efficient way to heat a building. Period. They move energy from one place to another at a rate four times what they consume, sometimes more. Many of them can move heat in both directions, meaning they can also provide cooling. That's a fun little bonus which you may or may not choose to use, but I will say that given long-term implications of climate change, you might want that handy.
