I have a beloved niece who is so woke, she's broke. In my first and only conversation with her about this, I asked her if it would be ok for me to identify as black, since I've always been sensitive to issues of racism and identify strongly with oppressed people. She said, no it's not okay. I asked why is it okay for a man to identify as a women. She said "Race is different". How is race different? I may sound like an ignoramus, but I seriously can't formulate a rationale for that, and our conversation stopped short because I had to go. Any thoughts? How do I respond to this kind of dogma?

@Imsoannoyed I don't know why identifying as a different race is wrong either. Race is different in the way that unlike sex, it isn't binary. You can't be mixed-sex, but you can be mixed race. Your "race" can be made up of all sorts of people depending on who your grandparents and their parents were. In other words, it's a "spectrum," as queers claim gender and sex is, so a person identifying with a different culture should be totally okay. Not to mention partaking in a foreign cultures or getting a foreign citizenship doesn't require life-changing surgeries and harms basically nobody.
