Idea: thumb drives that retain data for a set amount of time (say, 24h) and then destroy it automagically.I want to not have to think about safely deleting the data from the thumbdrive I used to move two files across the hall.Surely we could have that technology? #InfoSec 🧵

Big question is power. If using flash storage, *something* needs to measure time and then delete the data. That *something* needs to be powered.But maybe we can flip the script? Maybe this could be done using *volatile* memory and just enough of energy storage to keep it up for 24h?✨ Power runs out, data goes away! ✨Add a tiny bit of read-only storage for template partition table to be automagically copied to the volatile storage the moment it's plugged into a powered device? 🤔#InfoSec 🧵

It could also have a button to insta-wipe contents! Pretty trivial both in case of volatile-memory-plus-tiny-energy-storage, and in the case of flash-storage-plus-battery-plus-controller.I like the former version better, to be honest. Strikes me as more *reliable* as far as wiping is concerned — it *fails save*.I always wanted a hardware project. Sigh, but do I have the time?(Narrator: no, he does not)#InfoSec 🧵/end

@rcz yeah, somebody already linked to that.Although it's 64MiB (!) for 300USD (!!) it seems?

@rysiek Ah, I had checked the thread, but it doesn't show up for me. Probably just usual Mastodon interoperability failure due to blocking. 🧐

@rysiek Here's a mockup of the first prototype
