Chomsky, Bender, and Marcus keep writing op-eds saying that the human brain is a flexible instrument that doesn't have to see 10,000 examples of something but can quickly draw inferences from a few examples & revise its priors. Which is true! but man you wouldn't know it by watching Chomsky Bender and Marcus. #LLM https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/08/opinion/noam-chomsky-chatgpt-ai.html

@TedUnderwood such believers in thought. It's like a religion with these guys. I'm here for the people who believe in writing. Those people will ask the right question about AI. Instead of saying that the machine doesn't know when something is not the case, they await the moment when the machine can consistently *write* what is not the case.

@TedUnderwood the thing that's so bizarre about this is that Chomsky, in particular, spent decades arguing that what ChatGPT is doing now would be impossible. I'm completely baffled by anyone so completely incapable of admitting to being wrong.

@mgavin Yep. At least have a paragraph in there saying "while I was wrong about X ..." Honestly the editors should demand it.

@david_colquhoun@mstdn.social @TedUnderwood The only thing weirder than the suggestion that disagreeing on this topic is support for Trumpism is how many edits you've made to your own wikipedia page that you linked to on your own profile.

@TedUnderwood trying to have a policy of reading a profile for a bit before I say anything kinda harsh & it just completely backfired this time; I don't even know what to say.

@TedUnderwood @mgavin don‘t remember the exact quote but wasn’t it Chomsky, who infamously claimed he would love to have self doubts but unfortunately he just happened to be always right in every instance

@TedUnderwood there's a decided air of Larry Sanger vs Wikipedia in all this. Sanger wasn't wrong about everything but he was wrong Wikipedia would collapse without strong editorial control. Rather than admit this, he pivoted to claiming Wikipedia was a hot bed of child pornography (it wasn't)

@TedUnderwood @mgavin he was wrong about this, and he's wrong about human interiority and cognitive goo being the only mechanism that can generate the output he craves. Watch little known me be right, and famous him be wrong. Bet hard money with anyone on this.

I didn’t have the patience to respond to this op-ed with more than drive-by snark. But if you do, Raphael Millière’s response thread is good: https://twitter.com/raphaelmilliere/status/1633629722151202816?s=46&t=pyPXDADpU13739WKOvuqOw

@TedUnderwood My summary of the Chomsky article goes like this :CHATGPT is the Underpants Gnome approach to AI:1) Baroque elaboration of Markov chains 2) ???3) Intelligence!(But I'll grant that maybe the papers cited in Millière's thread maybe take a crack at step 2)
