There will be likely be an incredible acceleration in our cultural and scientific growth and variety once we transition to a post-money society.Reading the #Foundation series or watching #StarTrek is a better education than an #Economics degree. #ImagineTheEndOfCapitalism

@Jdreben I'm also a big fan of Iain M. Banks' Culture books for these kinds of thoughts as well.

@Jdreben for me he is second only to Frank Herbert for scope, and just the sheer number of ideas he works into his stories. An excellent teller of stories. He writes regular fiction under 'Iain Bainks' which is also excellent but super weird and dark. I prefer His sci-fi

It to took the #scifi stories of #Foundation and #Dune for me to be so fervently disgusted with #imperialism and #capitalism. Now I see it in the modern day every day.We have so many problems left to solve in the United States. It is incredibly difficult to reckon with being an American.I imagine that is a large part of why so many educators don't emphasize our current and historical abuse of other countries.

@Jdreben maybe it's time to read it again, read them in my late teens/early 20's. I got my penchant for reading as much of an author's work (in series mostly) as I could find. And rereading my favorites -

@Jdreben well yeah, but most of those futures in fiction come after either a catastrophic war with billions dead, or the invention of something that completely undoes scarcity in one fell swoop. Obviously I'd love the later, but the former seems more likely... And I'm not sure I'd survive to see the beautiful utopia of a post-money world!

@Jdreben Sci-fi is wonderful for exploring different economic systems and ways of thinking that more people should engage in!I particularly like how universal basic income becomes standard as AI / technology advances -- if not getting rid of money entirely. What I think is missing, however, is the process of how to get there. I can envision the benefits of a post money society, but the struggle against invested interests and general fear of change are large, unknown costs.

@mikestevens It's well said. Another commenter made this comment too and you're both totally right. How we transition there is complex. To me nuclear power was and is the best means by which humanity could truly transition to a post scarcity society.

@mikestevens I believe/hope one day we will have enough globalized (like a Dyson sphere) or miniaturized (like a replicator) energy and resource distribution technology to live in a Star Trek post-scarcity society.I think a big step towards surpassing the interests of wealth we could ALREADY take is by embracing and not fearing nuclear power. If everyone everywhere had access to nuclear power a lot of the need for money would be gone.

@FantasticalEconomics it's well said.Nuclear is my answer. The solution that so many fear but is so clearly to me a fantastic means by which we could eliminate at least energy scarcity, and from that cascade to eliminating the need or even desire for material accumulation.

@Jdreben Fusion would be a game changer! Fission I think has it's place too, but I can't see it ever getting to the point of eliminating energy scarcity.
