The only thing I hate more than giant SUVs and trucks in our cities is the bullshit discussion around giant SUVs and trucks in our cities. Here's my take on the situation in my latest video, now available on Nebula.https://nebula.tv/videos/notjustbikes-these-stupid-trucks-are-literally-killing-us

@notjustbikes@social.notjustbikes.com It's weird to hear you recommend cars as alternatives for once, I was expecting you to say "instead of an SUV get a cargo bike" lol

I expected people would be upset about my latest video about light trucks, especially with the harsh tone. When it went viral on multiple platforms (front page of reddit) and hit the Trending page in the US, Canada, and Germany, it reached a wide audience; not just urban planning fans. But now the video has over 800K views and the likes/dislikes ratio is 93.4%. That is overwhelmingly positive. So ignore the crybaby truck owners: the general public really is sick of these oversized trucks.

@notjustbikes I concur in seeing those SUVs and trucks as a murderous nuisance in citys. But the proposed solution for the suburbanites – to buy smaller cars – is none. You need an accessible, reliable, affordable, frequent, and fast, public transport and a complete biking infrastructure.

@Ulan_KA I guess @notjustbikes felt tired of making this argument you wished to see (that's basically what all his other videos are), & felt like changing things up by arguing that these are a direct downgrade in every way.

@notjustbikes Genuinely very happy to see this! I literally just finished watching.I would like to add that, to my eyes, a big reason we have so many crossovers is that people (like me, frankly) realize sedans are not at all a great way to package a car when it comes to its length/width, but hatchbacks and wagons are mostly *gone*So if you want something the footprint of a Camry but with a hatch... your only option is a crossover.

@TechConnectify @notjustbikes rip all the great hatchbacks of yesteryear

@williamcook @notjustbikes Absolutely. Small, two-row crossovers are ultimately slightly wider, slightly lifted hatchbacks so I don't mind them all that much.Anyone who gets a Traverse over a minivan though is making a /very/ irrational choice based on image.

@notjustbikes Apropos the tank, I saw a comparison recently which pointed out that some modern SUVs have worse sight lines than an actual abrams tank. Just inexcusable.

@Ulan_KA making this video and telling suburbanites to "just take public transit" would not have been received as well. It's confusing two totally separate topics: SUVs are stupid vehicles, and cities should be designed better. As @alcinnz said, almost every other video on my channel is about designing cities better. It would have been a giant distraction to promote public transit in suburbia as an alternative to light trucks in this video.

@TechConnectify Yes, your options are very limited in North America as pretty much everything has become a crossover. It's unfortunate, because the crossover is such a terrible format with so much wasted space on ground clearance.I ran into this when I picked some people up from the airport with a (carshare) Hyundai Kona. The luggage didn't fit in the Kona, but on the way back I got a Nissan Leaf that is almost exactly the same size, and everything fit comfortably in the trunk. Insane.

@notjustbikes well I will just say the size of crossovers can be deceiving. The Leaf is in fact larger than a Kona - about 10 inches longer. Plus, without being designed for an ICE drivetrain, it has some packaging advantages so it will feel even bigger.Honestly, the most popular crossovers are not actually that big - for example a Chevy equinox has almost the same exact footprint as a Civic sedan, and the roof line is only about 9 inches higher off the ground.

@notjustbikes If we are only looking at footprint, then the most popular class of vehicle today (compact crossover) is virtually identical to the most popular vehicle 30 years ago (midsize sedan).Obviously they're taller, but not that much. I agree 100% with your video, to be clear, and the CAFE loophole should absolutely be closed, but luckily today's most popular "SUVs" are fairly reasonable. It's really once you get to three-row models that packaging turns to garbage

@notjustbikes Although, I am realizing that a Civic sedan is probably a pretty big car in much of Europe.Anyway, really the whole idea of what a crossover is is nebulous in the first place. Is a Kia Soul a crossover? You could argue either way! And then you have models like this Subaru Crosstrek which is literally just a lifted Impreza hatchback. That magically turns it into a crossover. That's all I'm really trying to say here. Big car bad! Crossovers not always big.

@TechConnectify @notjustbikes guess its a matter of whether theyre able to classify as light trucks or not

@vegetablegremlin @notjustbikes yeah, I think that's the key. Genuinely, I don't think the crossover is that bad of a vehicle type; it's really just a hatchback, and the slight height bump offers accessibility advantages compared to a low-to-the-ground car. Just ask my folks. We do of course need to balance crash compatibility and hood height issues, but in my experience it's generally not crossovers that are being egregious in those departments

@TechConnectify @notjustbikes from what ive read even mild changes in hood height have significant impacts on collision survivability even if they arent the egregiously dramatic loss in visibility

@vegetablegremlin oh absolutely, I'm sure that's true, and that is one area in which an Equinox is definitely much worse than a civic. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as a real truck, but they are definitely harder to see out of and more vertical as a rule.I should park my Ioniq 5 next to a Camry at some point and compare. It's technically a crossover but it's on the low side. Honestly it's like a Golf scaled up 20%

@TechConnectify lol an Equinox is still pretty big on European streets! It's almost as long and quite a bit higher than a BMW 3-series wagon which is huge here! But I get your point. From an American point of view, a small crossover is a more reasonable sized car.I still don't think I'd feel comfortable driving my old Toyota Aygo in a world where an Equinox is considered to be a "small car" though!
