There is no such thing as a global norm. Infrastructure varies, as do culture and communications expectations. For Signal to be a globally useful alternative to surveillance tech, we need to perform well and offer relevant features, even if this means very different things in different contexts. https://signal.org/blog/signal-is-for-everyone/

@signalapp are you talking about features like a handle instead of the phone number?

@signalapp odd that you are talking about covering global needs, though your pivot away from community translations, and using a paid service instead, has led to many existing translations / localizations, usually of minority languages, to be removed from signal as "not of high priority". Many such issues have been raised here https://community.signalusers.org/c/translation-feedback/27/none

@Adrian @signalapp In the case of privacy + security esp, accuracy is essential. And the # of languages Signal was localized in was bloating the file size, making it more difficult/impossible for people with low-memory devices in poor network conditions to download, use Signal. The move to pro translations was very carefully considered, and it was made in service of the people who will rely on those translations to make critical decisions, and whose devices don't always support massive binaries

@signalapp Would be nice if tor was built in, many people handy enough to install signal aren't so keen on getting tor up and going to mask it.

@signalapp Relevant features like... oh, I don't know, an option for automatic cloud backup? Instead of actively disabling users from intentionally saving their secure automatic backups to cloud locations using the built-in Android feature that allows that?

@signalapp Thankyou so much for this. It's so wonderful and very affirming to read how you put your values into action. And it's incredibly helpful too: I can pass it on to my client base (whom I force to use Signal for comms with me) to explain some of the "weirdness" of Signal comes directly from excellent values.

@Mer__edith @Adrian @signalapp Thanks! Would it be possible to make languages downloadable on demand? That would help to keep base binaries small and allow people to keep their translations.

@signalapp My old argument for an alternative to phone numbers as user identifiers still stands. I continue my claim that this keeps #Signal out of some relevant use cases and makes it much less inclusive in certain regions where phone numbers are either shared or (have to) change often.MLS or similar approaches to #federation of user identifiers is the way forwards for a global messaging service.

@signalapp Really wish it had an encrypted backup solution on iOS and an option to hide phone numbers from others. Are there any effort going on this direction? I still have Signal on my phone eagerly waiting to see these features implemented one day.

@Mer__edith @signalappPhil, the Localization Manager about one year ago said minority languages should have been progressively integrated after few months. Is his sentence to be considered no longer true?https://community.signalusers.org/t/signal-localization-update/44905/23

@Mer__edith @signalappIn any case it's not a secret localizations are now worse made respect the past community efforts and all the old minority translations are still present, but day by day more degraded. If the problem was the file size, they should been have eliminated at all.Another way to resolve this issue could be let import a localization xml for users that want Signal to speak their language, as suggested here:https://community.signalusers.org/t/make-translations-for-minority-languages-available-again/51703

@signalappThis is unreal:"We heard from people, especially in South Asia and South America, that without stories (or something that would function like WhatsApp Status) they wouldn’t be able to convince their friends and families to start using Signal. And if your friends can’t use Signal, neither can you."I can completely understand that but, at the same time, you've cut off the foot of many other users by phasing out SMS support. People are far more willing to use an app if it can handle all of their messaging. Your logic makes sense in the tech community but in a huge non-tech population people are dropping Signal because they don't want to have different apps. I hear all of your arguments but if you truly want to be reachable by everyone then removing SMS is a severely hypocritical thing to do. In the communities I'm in SMS was the factor that started getting friends and family to use Signal in *exactly* the same way you explain stickers.

@signalapp Signal ist not for everyone anymore. Since you are removing SMS-support, the ease of use is gone. Not only I need one Software more for communication. Former Signal contacts have started to write SMS again. Some of them sometimes write SMS, sometimes Signal messages. It is all a mess. Thank you for breaking a once good product.
