Do you honestly think recipe bloggers *want* to write all the text that comes before the recipe? No. They write it for Google. You clicked on the recipe because it came up high in search. Google requires that kind of text to put sites high in search.I see people dunking on these bloggers almost every week, but they're just doing the best they can within the system.https://onezero.medium.com/war-peace-bacon-eggs-understanding-the-endless-recipe-site-preamble-a890b3c55ad

@grammargirl oh that makes so much sense… and I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of the algorithm as the reason, until you pointed it out. Ugh, Google.

@grammargirl Actually I do, but I'm glad that is not the case which is a bummer. I have seen some with a "jump to recipe" link near the top. It would be really crappy for Google to penalize that. I don't mind a short explanatory note at the beginning.

@grammargirl We really need a new system. Yet another example of how Google Search no longer serves its users as well as it used to.There has to be a better way.

@grammargirl OMG *of course* - this is so obvious now! Since I started to research and learn more about writing online - and SEO - so much of the boring samey "content" I always find online makes sense!

@grammargirl If it's truly just for higher search rankings, then how hard would it be to put a link at the top of the page that immediately takes you to the correct position on the page where the recipe is? If it's only about search rankings, the person publishing the recipe shouldn't care if anyone reads the actual story, right?I feel like there must be more to this we are not aware of.

@allenstenhaus A lot of them I'm seen have "jump to recipe" buttons near the top.

@grammargirl That's a plus. I've yet to come across that, but in fairness, it's been a while since I've looked for a recipe, so perhaps I've just missed it.Bias is likely playing a role here.

@grammargirl I keep thinking about this in relation to AI and semantic web. What new weird styles will writers be forced into with these systems.

@grammargirl I have no problem with that, I just wish they'd all include measurements the rest of the world used alongside bloody cups. Having to scroll through a ton of blurb is one thing. Having to do it 10+ times just to find a recipe you can use is another.

@grammargirl BBC recipes every time. Just add BBC to the search; no long nonsense, intrusive ads or videos. And you get recipes in grams as a bonus!

@grammargirl @drahardja They could put the recipe at the top and include their life story at the bottom? It would still rate but of course you’d not have to scroll past several adverts.Instead I open the page, hit CMD+F, type “ingredients” and press ENTER. Skips me to the important bit. ☺️

@grammargirlEssentially the same reason the YouTube videos have gotten so padded out in length too. It's not for the viewer... it's for the algorithm in hopes that it will end up in front of viewers. 😡I swear search and recommendations have gotten TOO good in a way. Instead of simply pushing stuff of interest to us to the top, it is creating an environment where we're all getting shit we don't want because creators HAVE to adapt to whatever it is that the algorithm decides we want.

@grammargirl That sounds soo much more plausible than the old explanation that just plain recipes couldn’t be copyrighted

@grammargirl Well, that explains why you run across a great recipe for homemade meat sauce for pasta and the writer starts out describing how she met her future husband in Tuscany. 😃

@grammargirl #Recipe sites are almost universally more sketchy than the places you can stream hardcore pornography from.Multiple layers of pop-up advertisements, requests to join mailing lists, pop-unders, streaming videos that follow you around the page, requests to send push notifications. Seriously, #pornhub isn't half as bad as the average recipe site. The only smart move is to buy physical recipe books, which lets you avoid the SEO blog nonsense and the sketch.

@grammargirl feels like an arms race though? Like the first recipe ever likely included 0 BS but blogger # 2 added a dash of BS to get more results and then blogger #3 added another sprinkle of BS which then kept snowballing to where we are now.

@grammargirl Thanks for pointing that out. That makes total sense, and I'd never thought of it.People who still find the practice annoying even if there's a good reason for it might want to know about a Chrome extension called Recipe Filter. It detects when the page you've loaded contains a recipe, isolates it, and displays it in a convenient popup, which of course you can blow away if you actually want to read the copy. Not helpful if you don't use Chrome, of course.https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/recipe-filter/ahlcdjbkdaegmljnnncfnhiioiadakae?hl=en
