I know everyone is probably getting tired of my BS night pictures but I'm going to keep posting until I get banned. My new heavy duty tripod arrived and I had to try it out. These were tonight with my DSLR and I'm still learning the settings but not bad for the 1st two pictures taken. Any pros feel free to pass on tips. @MrfunkedudeI appreciate that. I don't plan on stopping but I'm hoping to get my settings dialed in better. I'm still lost somewhat but having fun. Those pics required zero edit either. Don't tell anyone but I'm sneaking back to the garage for a puff. 🤫

@That_One_Guy keep experimenting. Turn up and down the ISO etc. You'll find your sweet soot - good quality, less noise. It's a balancing act.Learn the rules. Then break the rules

@That_One_Guy Have a look at the settings of any shots you took with the S22 that you like. (Even if on auto) Apply the same to the DSLR. Then change one thing at a time. The "for dummies" books are actually really good for the basics of photography (it's always handy to have a book to flick through while waiting for clouds to clear)

@CbfoleyI've got a "For Dummies" type book but more up to date and on my phone and tablet. The S22 has an astrophotography section, it allows for exposure time adjustment but not much else. So it's full auto and not really adjustable. I'll keep playing with the settings, I'm hoping to go somewhere darker this weekend.

@That_One_Guy Yes, but look at an image you took that you like with that ability. Look at the settings in details (mine is under details but mine is ancient). Then plug those settings into your own camera and see what you end up with. Then start adjusting from there. You're digital so you don't have to worry about development costs of film. Play around. Hence suggesting a previous pic settings as a start point. It's a triangle, so adjusting one will affect the other two

@CbfoleyYeah "the triangle" comes up extensively in my book and all literature I've read. I understand the concept I'm just trying to apply it to the process. I just sat and took 8 different ones with varying settings just to see the difference. My aperture won't open as much as the S22, I'm looking at a different lens to accommodate that.I keep this cheat card in my camera bag.Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it as I'm very new to real photography! Have a nice evening. 👋🙂

@That_One_Guy thats a good one to keep in your bag. So the 2nd photo up the top is a bit grainy, so dial down the ISOand try. Then adjust the others to compensate. Youll begin to get nearer to what you see in your head that you want. I was a landscape photographer that fell into dog show photography for over a decade (think Crufts). You'll be able to adjust on the fly for changing weather. Dont lose heart, read & practice. Understand your gear too, get familiar with it

@CbfoleyThank you! I really do appreciate advice from professional photographers as I'm a beginner hobbyist. My goal is to get good with my current camera and maybe advance to better equipment later. Those 1st two shots were using off the cuff numbers recommended in various places, not specific to my setting or equipment. I got two more shots later last night I'm going to post in a bit, I forgot to transfer them from my PC to the web. They were dialed back by half and seem a bit better.

@That_One_Guy E best camera to have, is the one on you. Better to take the shot even with a phone, than to miss it 🙂So dont worry about gear. Learn the rules. Learn about how it works. Practice loads - it's a lot easier now with digital, you see them nearly straight away & dont have to develop them yourself. And its mostly free (if you've a computer) rather than the costs of developing. Then when you know what you require go looking _AT_ gear. Feel it in your hand before buying

@CbfoleyI currently have a PC so no cost, I'm looking to upgrade for the software I'm using. My pictures are definitely shot with whatever is in hand. I also really like my camera, by upgrade I was thinking lenses. I've been sitting here at work running numbers for shot adjustments in my head. Last night was my 1st time using manual mode so it's all new to me.

@That_One_Guy that's the other thing that comes with photography - the software & editing.I've an older non-aubscription based Adobe Photoshop - it does what I need like clones out someone's hand or a dog lead. The free version equivalent is GIMP which is supposed to be just as good and is open source. I think I've a graphic somewhere for free equivalents of all software.I absolutely refused to use Lightroom for cataloguing, I'm from the "before" times so I had my own system...

@That_One_Guy 2/ set up on my laptop before Lightroom really became A Thing.Topaz Labs was also one I used use but I dunno if that even exists anymore? For the moment, the software that came with your camera should be enough. You'd often hear photographers talk about "investing in good glass".Coz it is an investment -But don't dismiss the 2nd hand market. Lenses can be pricey, other photographers change camera where they're not compatible or change brand (rarely)so sell theirs

@CbfoleyI have Affinity Photo 2 and I just bought Luminar Neo. I like Affinity but it didn't play well with Canon's RAW format very well. I have access to the complete suite of Adobe products (Illustrator, Lightroom & Photoshop) through work but I refuse to use it personally, they're all subscription based now and I'm not a fan.My 2015-16 gaming PC I built was great then but lacking now, so I'm pricing purchasing vs building another.

@That_One_Guy They'll do you while you learn a bit more about what you want to produce and what style you aim to go for. You'll spend hours messing about. That'll be hours playing with the camera & hours playing with software😁 But it's exciting. I've run into the same issue now with my laptop. It's struggling to keep up with me. But it'll do for now. I lost my bug during one of the lovkdowns& I'm feeling the itch again. So until I know its back, a struggling laptop will do me

@That_One_Guy that is EXACTLY what it's about. Fun.And Discovery. Enjoyment. Satisfying curiosity. If you're always shooting in RAW at the start, it may be a waste of power and time. While learning, jpegs can be ok unless you really really need the capabilities of RAW. In time, when you get it right in camera, you'll shoot less in RAW unless you want to keep them for the future to edit differently.

@CbfoleyI currently shoot in both, the camera and my cellphone produce both together. That way I have the option to edit if needed. I posted a set from the Butterfly House that were all straight JPEG. Storage has become so cheap I'm holding onto the better RAW shots just in case I want them later. It's been more fun than frustrating so far and I hope it stays that way. I'm getting a bit tired from my late nights though and will be taking a break this evening. 🥱

@That_One_Guy Yeah storage is verrrrry cheap now. When I first switched to digital from film, I paid £800 Irish pounds for 250GB storage drive. The biggest images my camera could take was 1280 * 960.I do hope it stays fun for you. Its hard when the pressure comes & then the itch goes. Lots burn out. Do it for you, no one else.

But small parts have growth, enough that theres a perfumery up there. You can feel you're part of a much bigger thing, just standing on those rocks. It's very hard to describe. These are just general shots from my phone, but that big white motorhome in the middle picture that sleeps 6, is a tiny dot in the 3rd one 🤯Poulnabrone: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poulnabrone_dolmen

@That_One_Guy The place could have ppl everywhere but it's as quiet as a church. It's something to experience. I come from a county in Ireland that has city, towns, villages, mountains, forests, beaches, harbours, islands - the whole lot but the rocks up there are very different. And its cool to be in the presence of something that was built by people so long ago! I dunno how they built it but it's pretty cool 😎

@CbfoleyIt looks amazing, we have a place called Elephant Rocks, it can be quiet on the top. The picture below is my wife and daughter at the top, taken about 7 years ago. It's a massive collection granite rocks set in the middle of a rural area. My wife has relatives in Belfast, I'd like to see Ireland one day. Lots of history there. I often feel I got cheated being born in the US, I'd be at home among 1,000 year old ruins. Our history is extremely shallow and rather uninteresting.

@That_One_Guy Wow! Look at the size of them! That's amazing. Imagine how many people have touched parts of those rocks. How a connection generations apart can be madeVery cute pic ❤️Definitely come over to visit. Belfast has so much history - just even in the last 50 years. It's very noticeable as you travel through different parts of the island, which rocks were plentiful in each area by the houses & ruins that are around. The stone walls tell a lot when you see the fields.

@CbfoleyI definitely hope to make it to Europe, maybe once my daughter is old enough to watch my house. Parts of the city of St. Louis, MO was built from a granite quarry at Elephant Rocks. There are names carved into the rocks in the picture going back to the mid 1800s.

@That_One_Guy That's really cool. Have you touched the carvings? Aww your poor daughter being left at home 😆

@CbfoleyYes you can touch the carving, I think some people make rubbings. I have to have some I trust explicitly to watch my pets. My last vacation was cut short by an inexperienced dog sitter.

@That_One_Guy Interesting. I wonder how many touches it takes to wear a dent in a stone or wear a bit of the carving🤔 Ah yes, now that I understand. Pets are family and need to be safe. If they can't come with, then someone reliable is needed

@CbfoleyI'm not sure how long it would take with people touching them with their fingers or wax rubbings. I'd say a long time as granite is extremely hard. I will try and get down there this spring and take some pictures of them. It's a 1.5 hour drive. Yes in my case my pets are essentially family. They all earn their keep in my opinion, I never have unwanted pests around.

@That_One_Guy Ah yes, I forgot that about granite. You're lucky your lot earn their keep. Mine have let mice run riot in the current house. They just don't care any more 😆 even the youngest who is 6 in June is more of a tracker than a hunter

@CbfoleyAll three of mine are hunters but the tail less Manx is a beast. He's 20lbs and I adopted him from a farmer who let them live in his barns. We got him at 8 months and he was already a skilled mouser according to the farmer.Mr. Minx is the husky tail less Manx on the right and his new brother we got about two weeks ago, Oreo.

@Cbfoley @That_One_Guy On my visit to Ireland I took pics of a similar rock stand, our tour guide explained about how much life was in the barren, it just seemed very rocky to me but beautiful. This was one photo I took, maybe a different place though. I love Ireland, so beautiful. The Giants Causeway was amazing too. 🍀
