Instead of reading Lovecraft, try this new paper that claims to identify occupations at greatest risk of disruption by generative #AI. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cdm?abstract_id=4375268

@TedUnderwood I'm not going to read the paper, but it sure seems to presuppose teachin' stuff is a snap.

@stormbringer What a strange thing to say. Could you explain your post?

@TedUnderwood Sounds like I’m going to be answering the phone even less in the future.

@TedUnderwood I'm not sure if this role has a widely recognised professional job title, but how could they miss "Machine Learning Dataset Builders"? 😂

@TedUnderwood they seem weirdly confident that a computer that can write code won't disrupt the teaching of computer science...

@afamiglietti79 I suspect their method isn’t fine-grained enough to perceive “coding” as a skill; it’s more like “oral communication” and “arm-hand steadiness”

@shawngoldwater @TedUnderwood "Everything that could be taught has been taught, and no further human interaction or intervention is necessary," is quite the hot take.

@GavinChait @TedUnderwood On a personal note, I'm a communications WRITER and am puzzled as to why my occupation isn't on the list - unless it's because it's assumed to have already been subsumed? This more for the over-the-horizon stuff?

@shawngoldwater @GavinChait they may not even have it on their list; it’s a coarse-grained analysis

@TedUnderwood The article makes sense to the realist (or perhaps cynic) in me but the caveat '...whether that exposure leadsto augmentation or substitution will depend on specifics of any given occupation' is key isn't it. The difference between risks and opportunities are crucial at this stage of proceedings. Fields that focus too much on the former (as the humanities are wont to do) could well miss the latter.

@TedUnderwood I'm reminded of teaching quantitative methods to communications undergrads. It's easier to measure with great precision than to create a metric which accurately measures the phenomenon you wish to measure.Ironic that many of the fields they claim are at greatest risk are those most experienced with tearing apart methods like this. The method isn't novel, logical leaps are great, and the theory is thin.

@TedUnderwood I am reminded of a tweet about a guy who found out halfway through his course that the lecturer was dead. The university was just running his recorded lectures from the year before and hadn't informed the students. My point is that while it may not be possible to automate teaching history universities will still do it. Rich universities even.
