       i hate how people think people exploit the government for welfare benefits, when the truth is more that the government is failing to help people find jobs. this idea of having the unemployment office is largely pointless. i'm not aware of a single country where this performs a useful function. they mostly just tell you to go to their website to fill out forms, so there's almost no point to showing up there.

       @thor The type of person who could understand an applicant and connect them to a non-terrible career is getting paid a lot more in private industry to do something else.It's kind of a trap of bureaucracies in general. They aggregate the people who are not good enough or motivated enough to go somewhere else.

       @thor In my view, "unemployment" also misses the big problem: jobs are jails that waste most of our lives.Instead of trying to get people into 20 hours a week of meaningful work, they are shuttling warm bodies into busywork jobs.

       @thor My one experience with unemployment after getting laid off was them telling me I didn't have enough availability as a full time student even though my retail work at the time worked around my school schedule. In the US, companies pay the unemployment benefits, so there's obvious motivation to deny such benefits if they can.
