I’ve been watching the cute girls go to the gym to get jacked anime and that combined with @mario has inspired me to get in shape.So I’ve started doing some exercises and figuring out how to alter others to accommodate only having one arm. I also plan to start jogging but sadly it’s getting too hot to do it during that day so I’m going to have to do it early in the morning which means getting a proper sleep schedule in place for me to be able to do it. So that’s something else I’m going to have to work on. I’m also going to start eating healthier and counting calories. I also found a good deal on some protein powder that I plan to use for fruit smoothies and a few days ago I bought a scale so I can track my progress.Additionally, I need a recommendation for a good fitness tracking app. Preferably something open source but if I must be tracked then at least something other than Google Fitness. From the animu I also learnt that eating just one big meal a day like I’ve been doing isn’t ideal and is actually counterproductive. Instead, I should eat smol meals and snacks throughout the day :yui_shrug: So, I’m gonna be making some big changes. The main thing is going to be keeping the motivation going because I have a real bad habit at procrastination and falling into a rut of complacency. Oh yeah, as of today, I have been smoke free for a whole week. This is turning out to be a big self-improvement year for me. Waistline is a great calorie counter open source android app I've used for almost a year. It doesn't track exercise though, but has body measurement goal setting too.I used it to replace Fat Secret (similar to My Fitness Pal) and I'm very pleased with it, has all the features I care about (calorie counting with nutrient breakdown and goal setting, and barcode scanning for foods with the USDA and Open Food Facts db)As for exercise tracking, I workout out at home and maintain spreadsheets.When I went to a gym for several years I used pen and paper, and since I was a gym member I asked for replacement workout tracker journals (I think had to take one PT session to get the first one, thereafter I just asked for new ones when needed).@sjw

@xue @mario Yeah, I live in Mississippi. Plus I've had seven heat strokes in my life so I'm super vulnerable to overheating and heat strokes :shrug: It's not so much the heat as it is the humidity. FatSecret has the exercise counter and I think it subtracted cals burned from consumed, but I never used it. Once I calculated my TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure, there are many calculators online for it) then I knew what my body burned on average and I decided to just count calories and adjust total calories consumed to a deficit (or surplus) of my TDEE. In the long run, all that matters with tracking is consistency.FatSecret was great, and I used it for almost 6 years, until I installed an AOSP os on my new phone, and installed NetGuard to firewall my apps. I blacklisted all the urls FatSecret tried to connect to except the bare-minimum of functionality. It was pinging google and facebook constantly!@sjw

@sjw @mario If you want to lose weight, focus mainly on getting your larger muscle group as big as possible. So leg day every other day. You can do squats and reverse Nords just with body weight (check out some callisthenics progressions for them).For the jogging, depending on how much over the weight you are, don't overdo it, as for not hurting your knees. Start very light, then increase once you start losing weight. Also what will give you more bang for the buck is sprinting or hill sprints

@sjw @mario Just try to put on as much muscle as possible at first, then losing the fat will be much easier. If you've never lifted in your life its very easy to make massive gains to 80% of your natural muscle mass limit in the first year. Just try to lift heavier and heavier. Deadlift, Squat, Bench, should be main foundation. 3-4 days per weak lifting. Best time to eat carbs is before and right after workout. Eat 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight, carbs and fat to fill out the rest of your calories. Eat lots of eggs, and chicken breast, fish, and red meat once or twice a week. Carbs stick to oats, rice, potatoes, beans. Cut out sugar and fried foods. Cholesterol boosts testosterone, eggs have lots.

@sjw @mario Focus on proper form over lifting more weight with bad form. Proper form will let you lift more with less injury over the long run so perfect your lifitng form with deadlife and squat and gradually increase your weight over time. If you can't lift something with good form, you are better off lifting lower weight with good form than lots of weight with bad form. One injury will set you back much further than any gains you will make going too heavy with bad form.

@sjw @mario When you done adding muscle and its time to get shredded. Figure out your maintenance calorie level based on your weight, then go for a 500 calorie daily deficit. This will lose you 1 lb of fat per week. Continue lifting as normal, your strength might go down, this is normal, you should retain your muscle mass if you keep lifting heavy on calorie deficit. Some people try to go for 1000 calorie deficit and 2 lbs per week of weight loss, but this is much harder to sustain. When it comes to gaining mass or losing fat consistency is key so never try to rush, fitness is a lifestyle and a marathon, the fastest way to get their is consistent routine that you can sustain over months and years, not short burst of hard work overdoing it and burning yourself out. Rome wasn't built in a day, and a good phisique will not be either.

You get medically discharged from the US military after your 3rd heat stroke because at that point your body is so susceptible to the heat you're more of a liability. I'm more than double that...

@sjw @mario I like to split pulling and pushing into 2 different days because the supporting muscle groups can be worked out on the same day without affecting the next day. Bench press uses shoulders, and triceps, so on the day you bench do your bench first for 5 sets to failure with a spotter. If no spotter use dumbells so you can drop the weight. Then do shoulders since military press uses Triceps also. Then finsih off with tricep workout like skull crushers or cable pulldowns, or some other dumbell exercise for tricep you can find online.On back day start with deadlift for 4 sets, use proper form and don't go too crazy with it until you confident. Then do bent over barbell or dumbell rows or cable rows, then lat pulldowns. Finish off with bicep curls with bar or dumbell.Leg day Squat, dumbell lunges, hamstring curls, leg extension, then finish with calf raises using dumbells on the stairs or if they have a calf raise machine at your gym use that.ATry too keep your workout to 45 mins or less, 4-5 sets for main lift, 3 sets for secondary lifts, 90-120 seconds of rest in between lifts. Have at least 2 days of rest before working out the same muscle group. For beginner 3 days a week and 1 week between working the same muscle is good, then when you more advance try to work out the same muscle 2x per week with a few days of rest in between. Muscle is built during rest period and torn down during exercise so rest is as important and working out.

@haberdasher @sjw @mario A few sessions with a trainer probably isn't the worst idea if you are starting out. Trainers are expensive though. Its not rocket science and youtube videos are free.

@LorgarAurelian1488 @PapaPole @mario @RaHoWaJoe @haberdasher It is what it is. Honestly, having one arm isn't nearly as bad as having to deal with the nerve pain. But yeah, having trouble figuring out how to do upper body exercises. I mean, things like curls I can do no problem but when it comes to chest and back I'm kind of drawing a blank.

@PapaPole @LorgarAurelian1488 @RaHoWaJoe @haberdasher @mario Well I only have about 75% of my rotator cuff on my right arm and no use of the bicep or tricep (plus no hand) and what I do have is weak already mostly because of poor nerve connections. I can try to work on it but I doubt it'd be able to get anywhere. I could at least try, I guess. My C6, C7, C8, and T1 were avulsed at the root (fancy medical speak for "torn off of my spinal cord"). Actually, because of my body's particular nerve layout; I'm lucky the right side of my face doesn't droop and that my right lung still works.
