Putting it out there to all guitar players on Mastodon. I am going to venture into the dark side and buy a profiler for touring. Fractal, Line 6 or Kemper. I need advice.#Line6 #Kemper #FractalAudio #Music #GuitarPlayer #Profiler #Guitar #Amplifier #Mastodon #MastoArt #ArtRock #Musicians

@simon Hi, I’m lead firmware engineer on the Helix family for Line 6. My suggestion is going to be obvious, I think. On the of the merits of the product itself, which I’m happy to espouse, I can also offer that I’m extremely easy to reach online with questions and am very active in various Helix spaces like the Discord and Subreddit.

@simon (Also, minor point but Helix and the Fractal units are modelers rather than profilers - profilers create a mostly static snapshot of a specific sound whereas modelers seek to create a fully working digital version of the amp/effect/whatever allowing realistic adjustments and tweaking)

@simon Lol. Sorry, I don’t particularly like being pedantic about this stuff but since you’re trying to parse the differences between the units, I thought it might be a helpful distinction.

@thebishopgame Holy shit. The fountain head. The power of Mastodon ehh. I know you cant comment but the Helix is quite old now and I am thinking there may be a new model out soon. Strymon have released updated pedals with new features. I am passionate about my tone and its very important to me to have as close to the studio stuff as possible. e.g. I use a real Leslie 145 etc etc. The problem is with the new project there is a lot of new gear - synths etc - and I will be task loaded.

@simon You’re right that I can’t comment about any future plans. What I can say is that we’ve released a steady stream of updates for Helix since launch and will continue to do so. The latest update, 3.50, brought a completely revamped and much improved cab engine. The Kemper is actually older than Helix, if that factors in.

@simon I can very confidently stand behind the quality of our sounds - I use them regularly in my professional audio work and our gear gets used by professionals at the highest levels of both live and studio production. On top of that, I think we have hands down the best and most user friendly UI.

@thebishopgame I have heard that, also the quality of FX. What’s the Leslie emulation like? Also can you use it with acoustic guitar. ie no amps just FX? These may seem stupid questions to you, sorry.

@simon If you want to have a go at the sounds, you can try downloading a demo of Helix Native. The DSP is 1:1 with the hardware units and you can pass presets between them, the only difference will be your interface as the input. Just keep your input level within the target range and it should be pretty close though.

@thebishopgame I didn’t know you could do this and will give it a go. Thanks for spending so much time. It’s a big thing for me as I have a huge, expensive custom switching rig built by Steen Skrydstrup, but for flying its impossible hence went the GigRig G2 route but now need to move that next step as on this tour we have a bunch of analogue synths as well.

@simon There’s a 122 and 145 emulation. Takes on them vary, and I’m not a Leslie aficionado so I think you’d have to try them yourself. And yes, you can absolutely use it as a pure FX platform, or as an all in one, or just amp emu feeding a power amp, or 4 Cable Method. We designed it to be extremely flexible and to play well with other gear. For acoustic, some people like mixing the signal an IR shot inside the body of a guitar to make it sound more real/less piezo.

@simon For sure. I work a lot of fly gigs so that’s absolutely understandable. I like to think the Helix/HX stuff really excels in those situations.

@simon I like the Kemper. Had a toaster and swapped it for a Stage. I was really blown away by it. But two years on I‘m back to sitting in front of my amp. I occasionally use it for recording though. I mainly use it’s amps. Not so much the FX.

@Kreuder Interesting. I am not going to replace my amps with this. Just now struggle flying with a big board plus the overhead of a load of keyboards for the new project. If budget allows I have a monster Skrydstrup switching system but need proper crew for that. Also have resisted upgrading to a GigRig G3 or buying new pedals. In the studio I use a real Leslie 145 and always play live with my 1974 Echoplex.

@simon It sure makes things easier, although easy doesn’t always translate to „better“ or „more enjoyable“, But in a large venue environment the analogue goodies might be lost on the audience anyway(?). Plus you instantly become friends for live with the in-house technician when showing up with the green box. :)

@stevepeeleiiSUPERB!!!That is a larger version of my Skrydstrup rig. I dont use a modeller in that. We also have four of the QSCK12’s So obviously the Fractal works for you 😍What’s the 8x10 for, you are a bass player or is it a super doom setup?I am dipping my toe in the water because of the flying to gigs situation and a gear overload with this new project. Looks like a FM9 for me.

@Kreuder Indeed. I do agree. Even the concept of stereo is lost in the big spaces as unless positioned in the middle of the venue in a sweet spot, the audience only hears one side. I do use a lot of feedback in my playing and will need some type of cab on stage, so will still irritate the engineer. Having said that I have for years been using a Germino JTM45 clone (excellent) with some hair on it live and get very few complaints from engineers. Dynamics are the key… https://youtu.be/jC3VH8W3nwM

@simon The Line6 Helix is not a profiler per se, but it is a great amp modeller plus effects machine. My understanding is that you can hook up a profiler to your existing amp, profile it and copy the sound. The Helix team did this for you in their studio and squished it all into the box..Check out Johnathan Cordy on YouTube for his demos of a few of these gadgets including the Helix, he creates some great sounding jazz settings for these devices..
