If any of your friends are interested, here's my assessment of the Twitter alternatives.https://terikanefield.com/socialmedia/I keep revising as I learn, but if you saw it before it's mostly the same.

@Teri_Kanefield I feel like you got back around to the conclusion I keep coming to: central systems are too prone to owner-whims.

@Teri_Kanefield This is why I can't support Post."We are not focused on...accessibility". Maybe it's changed since then, but...https://post.news/@/user/2I8KY7PphGpEorYcxGJsSdGuWlC

@Teri_Kanefield thanks! I switched to Mastodon. Sadly, many people/groups (and a bird) that I followed on Twitter either still completely or mostly use Twitter. I refuse to go there. Mastodon is no more difficult than Twitter; it took me about a year to really figure Twitter out, but understanding a bit about Twitter it took maybe a week to figure Mastodon out.

@Teri_Kanefield - great information; thanks for your insights. I'm using many of the sites you reference and find the most engagement and some very creative people on Mastodon.

@Teri_Kanefield I agree with your excellent assessment here. Looking into various Twitter alternatives myself and so far would agree that Mastodon appears to be the best one so far. Post’s business model is questionable and most of the people I followed there have pretty much abandoned it. Also trying Spoutible but too early for me to judge yet.

@Teri_Kanefield “The Fediverse” is, of course, more than Mastodon. The protocols underlying it are called ActivityPub and they are used in many systems. Those systems may share content - I.e. federate- whether or not they are microblogging services. For example there is a photo-sharing app called PixelFed (which is most like Instagram) and a video publishing system called PeerTube (like YouTube). There are also other applications using ActivityPub in the microblogging space - Pleroma and Misskey for example. The key takeaway is that any of these otherwise completely distinct and very different software services can all share content and anyone with an account on one of them is able to see, subscribe to, and interact with, anyone else on any of them, as long as they can connect to each other via those ActivityPub protocols.

@Teri_Kanefield Hubzilla allows full account migration, including networks of followers, and post history, and even cloud storage. One can open the same account on multiple servers, and have all of your content reside on all servers with failover. A server dies, your content stays up and online. But it doesn't have the audience Mastodon has.

@Teri_Kanefield I hadn’t noticed Lin Wood was back on Twitter. He’s one of the few notables I reported/blocked for cause. Elmo hasn’t messed with the code to prevent blocking… yet. I never was much for algorithms just had a few friends and accounts I followed. Post.news didn’t appeal to me cause subject to whims of owners. I spend most of my time on Mastodon and appreciated learning more universities will use it so more experts. Very complete breakdown of options, thanks.
