It seems that telling a language model "don't argue with the user" actually has the effect of tempting it TO argue with the user! This has been christened "the #Waluigi effect" (since it involves summoning evil doppelgangers) and here's a long slightly insane blog post connecting the Waluigi effect to #structuralism and Derrida. https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/D7PumeYTDPfBTp3i7/the-waluigi-effect-mega-post#Derrida___il_n_y_a_pas_de_hors_texte

@kissane yeah, I haven't read the whole thing either! I'm interested in the fact that it exists, but it's way too long and I have only about 20% confidence any of it is right.

@kissane I'm mainly interested in the larger meta-point that language models seem to be bringing literary theory back.

@TedUnderwood Yes! It was not the chaos development I expected but I am enjoying it more than I should.

@TedUnderwood this post had me spending some morning headaches on trying to understand why logits are so important for AI. I wonder if you and @sramsay would partner up to do a Statistics for Humanists to folllow up on Stephen's and Patrick's _Six Septembers_. I'd pay top dollar for the hard cover.

@sramsay @scott_bot @elotroalex @benmschmidt and even when we had finished all that, I still wouldn't be 100% sure about logits and would go ask Bing

@TedUnderwood @sramsay @scott_bot @elotroalex 1. A collection of dudes offering strong but contradictory opinions on an area of general interest with only cursory attempt to reconcile them is called a "podcast."2. Ergo: what you are proposing is less a book of statistics than a proposal we all have a "podcast" on paper.3. Ergo: the Talmud, itself, was the first archetype for the podcast.

@TedUnderwood what I love about long posts like this is that I can never identify where they shift from totally believable and fascinating to bonkers.
