Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has a new Bill he is supporting that would require Bloggers and others who write about Florida’s state government and Ron DeSantis to REGISTER WITH THE STATE so they can be monitored. This is what Putin in Russia and Victor Orban in Hungary have done. This is not Free speech or a Free press. America needs to wake up FAST. The sad reality is REPUBLICANS have fully embraced AUTHORITARIAN FASCISM and we have to come to grips with that.

@EarlDGray Let him try. Yes, it's dangerous what he proposes, but he can't exactly enforce it on those outside his jurisdiction, or even US jurisdiction. A VPN will make it even more fun.

@EarlDGray Actually, this seems to work on a matter of scale, and just how many people does he want to pick a fight with? Does he have the time or resources to blow on frivolous lawsuits to chase everyone? He only has a scope of jurisdiction that goes so far. He is passing a bunch of poorly thought out legislation that is starting to bite him in the sit upon.

@Tireironmonkey My bet is it would be inconstitutional, and is therefore 100% performative. He knows he needs the MAGA base to get through the primary, and like Fox, believes he needs to be to the right of the closest opponent to do that. Assuming he makes it through the primary, he will do as Trump using gaslighter tools to say “just kidding” and “look at my shiny new “conservative” policies that benefit business, religion, and gun manufacturers” to get the old guard GOP.

@EarlDGray It's a risky gamble. It already seems like the 45 ship is taking on water and sinking slowly in the east, so does Desantis really need all this? Isn't he just telegraphing his punches?

@Tireironmonkey News of Trumps demise is a bit premature. And the dissolution of the MAGA base is nowhere on the horizon. DeSantis knows this. Trump just won the straw poll at CPAC. That explains a lot.

@EarlDGray I'm old enough to remember when CPAC was just another stopping off point, like Reagan just showed up but was not of or by the actual CPAC, and by the lowered attendance this year it may be receding back to what it was for so many decades. The rift in the House as GQP are eating their own by the infighting leads me to this. The cases against him are proceeding, rats are jumping off the ship to save themselves. CPAC may have some import, but not as much as once was.

@Tireironmonkey Maybe. But as Fox illustrated, the MAGA tail is wagging the dog now. DeSantis knows he needs them and will go right (all the way to fascism if needed) to get the base. Trump will be the decoy, and DeSantis is betting once he gets the nod he can move enough to the middle. That sounds implausible until you think whether Republicans will vote a democrat over Desantis when he (like Trump) promises Republicans the laws and judges they want, without the Trump stink.

@EarlDGray I'm not sure if it's wag the dog since they aren't covering CPAC, as much as the Stalinesque tactic of erasure. It happens every time, they ride the coattails of their star child until he becomes a liability and move on to the next goon. No honor amongst thieves. The fissures are showing, and the chaos may be an advantage. Don't forget there is still a strong libertarian streak in this country that if Desantis pushes too much control, it will backfire.

@Tireironmonkey re: Wagging the dog “they” are not Trump, but are his base. The recent Fox depositions show clearly Fox believes they need to keep to the right of them to keep their viewership and get their money. It is very clear and DeSantis knows this also. He is operating accordingly. Sure it will present problems later, but one thing Republicans all know is not to look “too” far ahead. Step 1: Get to the playoffs (general election). Only then do you cross that bridge.

@EarlDGray Oh Desantis's or his lackeys actions and bills are backfiring, at least after swimming the cistern of Reddit, and being in a baboon butt red part of the country. Fox isn't helping either their own cause or anyone else's right now. The performative politics can continue because now MAGA toes are getting stepped on, might make a difference, might not. Yet old sins cast long shadows, and nice to see someone else sweating for a change.
