       I scoffed "I don't do apple" when someone gave my mother an Ipad.Now it sits on my desk and she can't log in.  Apple says to wait 8 hours before trying again.  I've tried her password and pin.  No erase button. No device on online account.As a technologist -- I refuse the apple ecosystem completely.

       @ndz 1: what the iPad wants is her password, not the sim pin. There is also another password for iCloud, which is not what the iPad wants now.2: if everything fails, the iPad can be reset with iTunes. If you can log in on iCloud, you can probably find some of her data there.3: Apple is far from perfect, but in practice your mother has the choice between Apple and Google, so there is that.

       @dl2jml thank you. I can log into her icloud but it doesn't know the device. That password doesnt work on the device.A restore would be fine.  She uses a couple apps but doesn't have any data loss concern. Probably easier to get her a new android tablet than to find a machine and install itunes.  Linux user here.  Not interested in installing itunes on anything I would use (VMs, etc).

       @dl2jml just tried the icloud password again.  Now instead of it blocking me for 8 hours between password attempts, it just says "ipad unavailable".Trash can it goes. Or I may recreate the Office Space printer scene....

       @dl2jml I suspect she accidentally updated or restored it and set a new password, thinking that she was trying to log in.  He eyes are not great.  Again, thanks.  I'll just get her an Android.

       @ndz If you have an Apple store where you live, they will reset it for you. Or you find someone with iTunes. At the price the iPad are, it is a bit silly to trash that machine.
