@SecularJeffrey Teabag first then only a splash of milk, is how most Brits have it.

@SecularJeffrey @Remittancegirl Needs an option for "it depends"? (I'm normally tea-first but when working I make tea in a 1 litre thermos jug, and measure the milk in first so it's properly mixed when I add the pot of tea. Yes, it's barbaric, but I drink roughly 1 litre per 2 hours while writing.)

@SecularJeffrey @cstross I have only recently discovered that 'milk in first' is a class thing. Apparently, I'm lowbrow.I did not know this, but I do this for a couple of reasons:1. With the milk in first, when I start pouring the tea, it's easy to see if it's not strong enough, so I can wait or add more tea. 2. It makes the milk taste creamier.

@SecularJeffrey @cstross P.S. One of the reasons why I never drink tea out is because I hate weak tea. I hate it with an inexplicable intensity. And most tea served in restaurants and cafes are cheap and pathetic and even two bags won't do.I love very strong tea. When I was really little, I had a Scottish babysitter named Ellie who used to say 'strong enough to run a mouse across it'. Yeah, that strong!

@Remittancegirl @SecularJeffrey @cstross I learned that once from my English boyfriend. Tea drinking Germans are a rather small minority ( and even more the few who drink it with milk), except in Eastern Frisia, where it's kind of a religion 😁

@qwertzalotl @Remittancegirl @SecularJeffrey @cstross I understood that “milk first” was to protect the vulnerable porcelain from the heat shock of the tea.

@elin @qwertzalotl @Remittancegirl @SecularJeffrey @cstross This is correct. Milk first doesn't make the tea taste better, but it does stop delicate and expensive China from cracking. As a working class Brit I've never had that problem, so the milk goes in after brewing. 😉

@qwertzalotl @Remittancegirl @SecularJeffrey Then there's the American Abomination:NEVER ask for tea in a restaurant there, you'll get a glass of lukewarm water with a tea bag on the side and it'll be that ghastly Liptons rubbish. Tepid floor sweepings, no milk.Americans simply don't understand tea.

@Dwinle @DarryB @SecularJeffrey @lednabm @cstross @Remittancegirl I've never seen clipper tea. English tea is here (🇩🇪) hardly available. We have twinings leafs sometimes ( quite expensive) and I'm quite lucky to get Yorkshire tea by mail order from an internet shop for the rather small British community (mostly ex members of the Rhine army) in northwest Germany.

@m3t00 @qwertzalotl @darwinwoodka @cstross @Dwinle @SecularJeffrey @lednabm @Remittancegirl When my Dad was stationed in West Germany he and a friend told one of their other friends that they knew a secret way across the border, and they would take him into East Germany for a night of drinking. So they blindfolded him so he couldn't tell anyone else and then just stayed in West Germany and went out and got steaming drunk. The guy to this day thinks they crossed over to go drinking.

@m3t00 @qwertzalotl @darwinwoodka @cstross @Dwinle @SecularJeffrey @lednabm @Remittancegirl He couldn't believe how much of a good time he had and was amazed at how friendly the East Germans were. All they did was walk around a couple of streets with this blindfolded guy and then just went to a local bar or two. It remains one of the funniest stories I've ever heard. They swore him to secrecy. Great picture mate. Following in the steps of Napoleon.

@Dwinle @bOrgCastAMO @cstross @qwertzalotl @m3t00 @darwinwoodka @SecularJeffrey @lednabm @Remittancegirl Now I am partial to a cider. Also Poncha, which is ubiquitous here. It's just mashed up oranges, honey and white rum. It's dangerous stuff.
