@grammargirl DisconcertingIt’s a word I discovered through a thesaurus rabbit hole, and it reflects how most things in the world appear to me, thus perfectly encapsulating my personality.

@grammargirl I can't name one favorite word! There are so many like: zoetrope, oubliette, cemetery. But what I love about language is that it is constantly evolving and being updated for the times we live in. I know some people hate slang and jargon, but I love how it shapes meaning--even when sometimes it causes a 180-degree shift in the meaning. It's fun, you know?

@grammargirlFound this fairly true statement on the Wikipedia page for Grammar:Jeremy Butterfield claimed that, for non-linguists, "Grammar is often a generic way of referring to any aspect of English that people object to."I would much rather celebrate Linguistic Variation Day. (There's a reason linguists are generally not put in charge of celebrating anything...)

@grammargirl Two favorites, actually: “moribund” and “lundibund”. Also fascinated that a lot of differences between american and english spelling are due to the fact that typesetting cost per letter.

It wasn’t very long ago that Microsoft released it Microsoft Writing Style Guide to the public. Else it was for internal use only or shared only* with vendors. More popularly known as ‘MSTP’ or Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications, it’s become a standard for writing technical documentation in the IT industry. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/style-guide/

@grammargirl So, so many wonderful things about language to love! Sound, meaning, how it looks on the page, evolution of meaning....A line I use every once in a while to prompt people to think about the flexibility of language: All blackbirds are black birds, but not all black birds are blackbirds.#GrammarDay #linguistics #words #WordPlay
