Bing is frighteningly good at scanning someone's social media and quickly summarizing their opinions on specific topics.

As Bing (correctly!) indicates here, I've been mostly positive about this new technology. But I'm a little uneasy about how authoritarian governments might use this to rapidly identify dissenters from subtle cues.

@TedUnderwood disturbing implications, if Bing Chat can quickly categorize people’s political beliefs, it can be used for mass surveillance by political parties (enemies lists? Targeted campaign outreach?). But also, how often will it be wrong? It would be a pain to do this manually, but would it just Cherry-pick a few posts to come to a conclusion? It can’t actually be scanning all posts by an individual.

@Riedl These critiques are both separately valid, though I think we should acknowledge some destructive interference *between* them—to the extent the summary is hasty/superficial it does also become a little less ā€œfrighteningly effective.ā€

@TedUnderwood Story time. In 2020 we tried to DM all of Biden's followers who lived in Iowa to remind them to show up to caucus.¹ Figuring out if a social user lives in a specific place is hard! (An unsolved problem in political data is matching social back to the terrestrial voter file). Most users don't geotag posts. We tried parsing strings from bios (including colloquial shorthands). Fairly poor success — my python weirdware was no language-aware search index!¹ https://mastodon.social/@MattHodges/109447885103608320

@TedUnderwood Yeah, I think it's the combination of the LLM + the active web index. It's already abundantly clear to me that Bing answers are far more useful than ChatGPT answers, and I assume a lot of that isn't the LLM spitting out content, but acting as one (or multiple) stages in a pipeline of information retrieval that includes classic search.

@TedUnderwood Interestingly, #ChatGPT refuses to answer questions about individuals on social media. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Better to be safe than sorry, I suppose. Being able to get a summary of anybody online opens them to attacks, but also speeds pre-emotive blocking.

@TedUnderwood I think it's both memory and knowledge chaining. I don't know when their training cutoff was, but my profile only briefly mentioned the agency. I think it may remember my name and is now connecting it to my work based on a web search, which is exactly what it's designed to do, but still rather disorienting.

@TedUnderwood That is the thing came to my mind immediately after reading this as well. This will not really help them if they already identify someone (thus searching "Ted Underwood Twitter politics"), as they can easily have this done by human. But they can do some search like "accounts who feel uneasy about this new technology". Another step towards digital dystopia.
