Sometimes I forget growing up reading French in Canada means I've got kind of different experiences from a lot of people I know. American colleague was asking for recommendations on what to do in Belgium, and I mentioned "oh, if you like Franco-Belgian comics, the comic museum is great". His response was, he couldn't name a single Franco-Belgian comic. Which is, I guess reasonable! But I grew up reading Tintin, Astérix, Barbapapa, Spirou, Schtroumpfs. The idea you wouldn't know them feels weird!

@misty The correct answer as to what to do in Belgium is 1) get some baguettes 2) get some fromage 3) get some lambics 4) enjoy

@amy Oh huh, looking it up there was a Tintin show in the early 90s - I totally missed that as a kid! I only knew the books but it makes sense the show made it to the US

@misty it’s weird because I’m aware of both Tintin and Asterix but they just didn’t seem to be easily available growing up and I still haven’t read either. I think we eventually got more exposure to Tintin like the movie but none of it ever seemed to stick here for whatever reason.I don’t know if it’s just something like comics mostly not seeming to be popular unless it’s Marvel/DC or newspaper strips?

@misty Growing up in Singapore Tintin and Asterix were both very well known to me. There entire shelves dedicated to them at my school library! Didn’t even realise they were translations until my late teens. In hindsight, should have been obvious with Tintin at least.

@misty I'm curious, did you ever get the late 90s games by Infogrames in Canada? PC or Game Boy would have been compatible at the very least?

@hlabrande French games didn't really make it to where I grew up (just books and VHS), but Québec got all kinds of French CD-ROM games the rest of Canada didn’t.

@misty Did you also read Bob et Bobette (Suske en Wiske), or is that more a Flemish/Dutch thing? But being Dutch I can confirm that clearly, all famous comics come from Belgium and France. 😄

@misty here in India we are far removed from francophone world and yet we know , read and love Asterix and Tintin.
