@Graycot Tbf, I am a bit disappointed that they ended up at cf and did not choose any of the alternatives. That would at least fix some of the issues we have with cf.

I am impressed by the speedy recovery and professionalism from the Fosstodon team in response to today's DDOS attack. If you know me, you know that I despise CloudFlare and I dunk on them every chance I get. Today Fosstodon implemented CloudFlare protection in response to the DDOS attack and it was 100% the right decision. Sometimes it's better to work with the devil you know to fix the short term crisis rather than letting things decay and rot.Well done lads, and great incident handling.

@Graycot what if cloudflare sponsors such attacks?

@Graycot (Side note from your main point, but I don't know much about CloudFlare—why do you despise them?)Agreed, +1 to the Fosstodon team! 👏

@themer Cloud flare prides itself on monopolizing internet infrastructure. They provide tons of internet related services such as DDOS protection, DNS, and cloud computing at low costs to the user. So what's the catch? They collect enormous amounts of data and are in a position to surveil the majority of the internet. This is bad for the open web and decentralization efforts, of which I am an avid supporter.

@Graycot @themer They've said that their use of CF was just to put out the fire and they're looking for something else long term. This seems like a sensible, pragmatic approach.

@pfpoitras @Graycot I’ll be curious to see what their long-term solve is.
