Everything really, writing history is supposed to be a continuous process. We're constantly gaining knew knowledge from digs, practical archeology, new historical sources etc. It all needs to be fitted together to see if the stories we tell about the past actually make sense.Small example, the other day I saw a video by a living history group saying how in the 1600s musket formations were organised the way they were because they considered aimed fire to be equivalent to murder and sinful, so they all shot as a group so that enemy casualties were "the will of god."Clearly retarded and I don't know where they got it from, but it's a good example of a historical "fact" that could stand some revision to see if it makes any sense.

I respect them for their military successes (up to Constantine, all downhill after that) and their building skills (unmatched until the industrial revolution). Even the act of maintaining the empire over 7 centuries was a difficult task done well. It was a pretty loose rule. Legionaries didn't always get their land and mercenaries got given whatever they had to to make them go away again. Roman armies sustained themselves by stealing whatever they needed from the local population, so sometimes mercenaries just kept doing that and took over a region for themselves. The imperials would politely ignore it if they couldn't do anything about it and might eventually formalise it if it benefitted them.

Anyhow, everyone in those paintings looked like a damn Swede. I should note that there was no Internet in 1546 and Spain was not nuked like Japan in 1945.
