Almost exactly ten years ago, I became Australian. I cried when I got my celebratory potted plant, and flew flags all the way home. It was the first nationality I chose. I may never have gotten the sexy accent, but I still strongly resonate with that indomitable Aussie irreverence.

@nicole We felt similarly about Canada - Australia would have also been a great, and warmer, choice for us.

@toddtyrtle Happy you liked it anyway, despite the weather. Definitely one of the strong points of Oz. Hey, kaise ho? (That's all the Hindi I remember!)

@nicole G'day. It's the first time I've heard the accent as "sexy". I'm glad there's some Oz in your mix.

@kmaustral My husband is Australian born and bred... and his accent was the thing that first drew my attention! But I'm a sucker for most accents/languages.

@nicoleThere seems to be something about being Australian. I know several people who are actually British, but call themselves Australian, despite the fact they no longer live there. Funny, isn't it?

@dodothedev Well, there's also nationality-- residency is one thing, but it's usually harder to get nationality, so people may be more inclined to value it more highly. I know that's certainly the case for me!

@nicoleYes, I was wondering that. But do you deny your birth nation (or preferred term)? I know one lady who'll swear blind she's Australian through and through, but she was born in Chiswick! 🤣I love both my heritages, both French and British. I'd never call myself more one than the other, I'm a straight split down the middle. I wouldn't deny either my french or British nationality because they both are part of me. That being said, I didn't have to do anything to get them.

@dodothedev I think everyone's experience is different. Personally, I don't feel "split down the middle". I don't deny being Filipino. I'm 100% Filipino. I'm also 100% Australian. And 100% Dutch. At some points in my life I have felt 100% American. Maybe someday I'll feel 100% Portuguese. Those things can exist for me simultaneously, but also, that connection I have can wane too, so that sometimes I don't feel particularly Filipino, for example. Identity isn't based on facts.

@nicoleOh, I totally agree, and didn't want to sound like I was dismissing your or anyone's right to feel they belong to another country. Like I said, I've only ever been french and British and never lived anywhere else. If I moved to amazing places like you, I'm sure my view would rightly change. If I'm honest, I'm a little jealous.

@dodothedev Oh, no worries, I didn't think you were being dismissive. :) I was just trying to explain how confused I sometimes can be about my own identity. It changes quite a bit from day to day. France and the UK seem like awesome places to me!

@nicoleCool, just wanted to double check ☺️.I do understand a little. There are times I wish I was in France when I'm in England, and times when I'm in France I miss things about France. 🤷🏻♂️
