I enjoyed the schadenfreude from #TwitterDown, but there's something more here. Real talk: #FRZ has way more downtime than birdsite. Our monthly budget is about half a single Twitter engineer's hourly pay. I have to reboot to apply security patches. If power goes off in my living room, then the site's down until it comes back on. The whole system is a chain of single points of failure.But love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down.1/3

I love this system. When it hurts, I fix it. And while I'm doing that, @TheGibson and friends have Hackers.town sailing along. And if it goes down, @jerry and his gang are carrying Infosec.Exchange along. And dolphin.town is still squeaking. And some kid in Brazil is running a server from her laptop. And the Pixelfed folks are uploading pictures. And BookWyrm users are too busy reading to notice.And they all run on love.2/3

This is what the corporate services can never give us. They're going to be better staffed, with people on call, and giant data centers, and failover systems. Those are good things to have. But one giant entity can't give us something made with pride and running on pure passion.Communities will come and go in the Fediverse. But I hope, and work to ensure, that a network of interacting communities building and sharing cool things together is here to stay.3/3

@tek Reading this and I actually think it’s good that this system makes user into partners, at least in the small sense that we have to be aware of who is doing the work to make it operate. Corporate social media makes us feel entitled that the “product” (the servers, moderation, etc) has to be working 24/7 but it actually takes people to do that (who to . Maybe we don’t NEED or even benefit from 24/7 & rarely failing social media.
