@DK_Dharmaraj To be honest they fell back from the eastern half of the city today. They have been evacuating wounded and some others. If they escape, then Russia took way too many casualties just to take some ruins.

@General_Ursus @DK_Dharmaraj The casualties in the Bakhmut sector are at best 2-1 in favor of Ukraine over the past several months. Those are acceptable losses for capturing such an important center of gravity. The Ukrainians don't seem to have the organization to conduct a successful withdrawal. Even if 70% of the forces escape, the amount of manpower and logistics that will be freed up for the Russians will be more than enough to continue the momentum. I do not expect the Russians to trap 10,000 Ukrainians. They will give them an out and continue the push west. There's also the chance that Russia may simply want Bakhmut under their control before the speculative operation towards Dnipro and Zaporasia. Which would make a lot of sense.

@Punished_Potatus @DK_Dharmaraj I feel that if they don't capture a significant number of them or at least get them on the road, that the 2 to 1 casualties you said, which I totally agree with, wasn't worth it. Bakhmut itself imo is not strategic. I'm blackpilled tbh because Ukraine has retreated from the eastern part of the city. The Ukrainian goal in this but other battles too take Vuledar, is not to hold these cities. But to pile up Russian casualties sky high, before escaping without getting captured or killed. If that happens in Bakhmut, then to me it was all a total Ukrainian victory. And I have to question the competence of the Russian military authorities.

@General_Ursus @DK_Dharmaraj Russian casualties have only been high specifically in areas with RU Regulars assaulting Bakhmut and Vuledar. Overall, Russia is not at a loss in terms of death to kill ratios. Wagner also does not have a death issue, at least with their professional force. This idea of a Wehrmacht-like strategy from the Ukranian perspective is not a reality on the ground. In urban combat, Russia generally takes the advantage even when on the assault. Ukraine only has an advantage when they hold fire control over a large open area that Russians must advance through. It is a 1-1 fight in almost every situation in the city.Bakhmut is also a vital city. It is part of the Donbas defensive line, and a major center for logistics. The Ukrainians do not have a similar position to fall back to. Wagner is singlehandedly winning this war right now.

@General_Ursus @DK_Dharmaraj Russia is just going to starve them out and level the strongpoints. Ukraine's only hope is a dual relief counterattack + breakout. Which they would have done already if they could, or used those troops to stop Wagner in the first place.

@Punished_Potatus @DK_Dharmaraj I'd say Ukraine is winning this war right now, given the appalling casualties Russia is taking, while failing to actually win any victory. Again, if Wagner fails to capture thousands at Bakhmut, then this battle was a defeat. Ukraine already has lines behind Bakhmut where they'll bleed the Russians again.
