@hidden I admit I am a unsalvageably malebrained antisocial individual who cannot read people or social cues to save my life. Why couldn't the characters just communicate privately and be like 1. do we like each other? 2. are we a good match in fortune and status? 3. are our families compatible? and whatever else needs to be asked in their time and place. I haven't read the book yet because I'm a little zoomer who spent like 8 years of my life completely frozen but rich people love to inflict suffering upon themselves. I've heard some people say that one of the conundrums of modern society is that the extreme social rigidity and requirement for social performance that was previously only the realm of the wealthy is being applied to lower and lower classes of society. I'm not sure if that's true but it was an interesting thought, and it shows what is to many people the most horrific truth imaginable; the wealthy and powerful are not any better off than we are.

I forget if it's in Hunger Games, it's definitely in Alita Battle Angel. People always told me: don't bother trying to make bank and retire early. You'll get used to wealth and your living standards will increase. Work on something you'd be happy to work on for the rest of your life. I'm not sure I buy it. I genuinely feel like I'm too much of a SIGMA MALE (read: autistic and oblivious) to succumb to the lifestyle pressure. Only tangentially related, but here's something which I heard an edgy guy in a leather jacket say when I was a kid. Someone asked him what's the definition of money? He said, "Money is a quantification of your ability to impose your will on others."
