This. SO MUCH this. “I was on the internet in the 1990s, and I remember when people just made stuff for fun — as a gift to other people. It seems like there’s less and less of that spirit remaining, and it’s why the internet sucks now. It’s why I have to append ‘reddit’ to my Google searches to avoid getting SEO glurge.”https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/28/23618804/google-facebook-login-ads-web-design-hell

@killyourfm @charims@social.pcwideopen.coI get his point, and I feel very much the same way -- but that's why minimal personal blogging (and micro-blogging) is on the rise. Mastodon is a good example, of course, with the whole bird side exudes. Myself, I always had a personal blog, and now I'm on Micro.blog. There's Neo-cities... There are others. It will take some time before public website catch on, because marketing is a thing. It won't die off in a day. But meanwhile, I have my links.

@killyourfm « The more each site tries to create its own little walled garden, the less valuable the open web becomes! »

@killyourfm I see this in the RPG space. I've even done it. My recent Dulsi's Dragonlance Addendum is on DMs Guild rather than being put up for free on my website.

@killyourfm So let's say I want to make part of this change. How? When? I think this should be more of an alarm sound for awakening and doing something about it rather than just agreeing and complaining. What do you think?

@dooms god, I could discuss this for days. Suffice to say I agree with you. As I finished this article, a small part of me was disappointed the author didn't brighten things up by offering a solution. Even a silly one. (Not that escaping into nature isn't a valid one, but it doesn't solve the underlying problem). Maybe if there's enough pushback against horrendous web design practices. Maybe if enough people are willing to abandon the conveniences Google provides. Maybe if we see more ...

@dooms ...people continue to start personal blogs again, or embrace the Fediverse (with both their time AND wallet). I don't know, I feel like it would take an almost insurmountable number of hurdles jumped to even start solving this. I WANT to. I don't know where to start either. The mixtapes I share are my way of doing something fun and free on the internet, but we need a MASSIVE and global cultural shift in mindset.

@dooms Speaking as a former tech journalist who became so disenchanted with having to churn out more content to make less money (and forced to appease the ever-more-hungry Google SEO machine), I honestly lost faith in the whole operation. I thought I had something more profound to say... Just think the entire structure of the internet needs to be nuked and paved.

@killyourfm the trouble with giving things away for fun is that people (or more specifically, Americans) think it's an elaborate conspiracy to end capitalism and topple democracy.I speak from experience. :eyeroll:

@killyourfm and as you said, not that we have enough critical mass of people (and business) to make it happen, but we may try to make it better from scratch when there's an opportunity. Do you mind if I do a small invitation? The advent of quantum technologies -specially the promising quantum internet- brings light on many points (crypto-, infra-, tech-, social- and ethical- wise) that I think we must make part as it's still being designed and prototyped. The same with AI, and...
