Newbies to Nostr are acting like this is exciting and new and never done before. It's really disappointing that alt-tech never became popular and people think that Nostr will make it big. Don't forget about XMPP, Matrix, Mastodon, ActivityPub, etc .....These have relatively smaller userbases compared to Twitter and it's not new. Did everyone forget history or was never exposed to these cool technologies? The end result is that the most people don't give a shit.I hope that Nostr really makes it big and becomes mainstream. The likely end result is that Nostr will be like Mastodon and have a few million users in segregated communities that hate each other

Even if there’s a 1% chance of Nostr becoming mainstream we have to give it a shot!“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. - Wayne Gretzky” - Michael Scott

What is nostr doing differently than unbannable accounts and zaps?

When I see the things that happen on Twitter, I don't want to interact with those people except to reach those who are lost and looking for something more mentally engaging.Somehow, the Nostr crowd manages to be even MORE boring than the Twitter crowd. It really is incredible. But yeah, alt-tech is always going to be for nerds, but if there's one thing I've learned the past few weeks, it's that not all nerds are created equal. Some just genuinely don't have any personality at all and really do fit every stereotype about them.

to be charitable, everybody finds stuff for the first time at a different time. everybody is here because of bitcoin but a nonzero number of people got into bitcoin for freedom and not just fat stacks so i am giving people the benefit of the doubt

To be honest I have not tried Mastodon. I wanted to follow mastodon users but never could figure out how to join a relevant server. I have not revisited since.Granted Nostr is not the easiest to use either. That said, Nostr is more than just a messaging Protocol. Devs are looking for ways to expand this. For example, one idea is to use the Nostr network to replicate go fund me. Another example is #[5] offering millions of sats for someone to create a decentralized replacement for GitHub.

If you make it about money, it will never be good and you are doing it for the wrong reasons. ActivityPub, which is the protocol that Mastodon and the FEdiverse use, is also more than just a messaging protocol. It also powers another decentralized tech called PeerTube, which nobody uses. Try out the fediverse (mastdon-like) https://poster.place or https://brighteon.social . Just just one for 5 min and notice the differences. You think this is cool shit but many others have did better and still failed.

To be fair tho, I would prefer a few fragmented silos to everything being in twitter/facebook/Instagram Getting everyone connected on a single protocol is kinda Utopian. My expectations are a lot lower

there's some reasos why many things that are related to stuff that are adjacent to things like alt tech and foss don't take off:- no marketing- bad user experience/interface, all fedi frontends rather suck, with pleroma-fe being good if youre a nerd. But it's not pretty and that matters. Android apps for the fedi also fucking suck and are ugly.these 2 reasons (the ones i remember now anyway), create a cyclical problem similar to linux's that ends up with things like fedi barely having attention

yeah. freetard nerds and some nerds dont like this, but if you want to be successful, you need to get steve job's mentality and have an incredibly autistic view of how to make your stuff VERY ATTRACTIVE and VERY easy to use.

> decentralized replacement for GitHubThat's called Gitea, and there's been a bounty to add federation to it for a long time.https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/1612https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/14186The fact is that most people are happy enough using Github and dealing with the trannies in charge of policing wrongthink.Because most people, even (and perhaps *especially*) programmers, are sheep.

It would be nice to be able to access a decentralised repo with a single address though. That way if one seed goes down you can seamlessly switch to another.Something like https://github.com/ipfs-shipyard/git-remote-ipld
