I love Synology gear. Love it. I've used it for years, and recommended it to happy friends. But *do not* buy their branded drives or RAM. It's always multiple times more expensive than good name-brand alternatives.

@tek I have bought the RAM before but never the drives.

@vmstan I’ve always had good luck shoehorning officially unsupported amounts of RAM into their boxes. I’m not going to start paying their prices this time around.

@tek I lost my Synology router in a lightning strike and had to get a cheapie TP-Link as a stop gap, and man alive, I miss it every day. I'll eventually replace the TP-Link with another Synology.

@spacerog Does that actually do anything? I’m using NVMe SSDs that aren’t on the compatibility list but the unit doesn’t seem to care.

@tek I think it depends on what model you have, higher end Syno's put up a big red 'unsupported' banner. Or so I am told, I don't see it on my 1513 or 1522+

@smallerdemon If lightning hit this, I'd be Ubering around trying to find another ASAP.

@nateb Got it. Pretty obvious issue the moment I saw their drive prices. Got my own WD Red drives

@tek @hen @nateb I remember a clip from WAN show where Linus explained how SMR was bad from like 3 years ago or so. Dunno why they decided to keep making themhttps://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=8IRjFZ9xEj8

@sylentpunk @hen @nateb I don't get it. They're unfit for purpose. I know there are short term profit reasons, but a good reputation has measurable financial value, too.

@smallerdemon Not here, but I was using them for Mrs Tek's offices. Setting up a cross-office VPN was super easy, and later adding client VPNs so she could work from home was even easier.
