“The reason most public transportation is seen as ‘losing’ money is precisely because it charges for trips. If you don't charge fares, suddenly it can't ‘lose’ money. It just costs money, the same as the roads.”This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.

If you want to see what a road looks like when it doesn’t lose money, look at the 407 in Toronto, which costs $0.50 per kilometre to drive along (about $0.58 USD per mile in freedom units)(And that has a lot of mitigating factors even so)

@dx In the end what you have is the voluntary sector, where people have to judge whether the cost is worth it, and the involuntary sector, where people get to foist the costs onto their neighbours. There should be no involuntary sector.

@dx tbh just add public transport tax. Then use the tax money from that to pay for the public transport expenses.Suddenly free* public transport with no shitty ticket system or other worries, just hop on.*free as in "everyone pays for it through tax money"

@dx #Vienna provides a practical plan for how to get to that point: around half of residents have a 1€/day "Jahreskarte" year ticket, so we already have the feeling of transit without tickets. This has been expanded to the #Austria -wide "Klimaticket", which is the same idea, but for all railways and public transit in the whole country. I think this approach is much more politically possible than trying to just flip systems to have no fares.

@dx, a friend of mine has once made an interesting argument about a certain industrial plant switching from #rail transport to road transport. The numbers were pretty clear: when they used railroads, they were charged according to the maintenance costs. After switching to roads, taxpayers paid for the damage caused by their heavy trucks.

@dx great! i can pay for public transportation so that people in the city can ride that shit for free every few minutes while i get "bus every quarter day" here and get taxed to death for the totes evil car i need because all subvention for transportation infrastructure has gone to said cities where the left and green voters are for decades now.:awesome_rotate:

@dx @HerraBRE Another angle for you: “If every trip in a car cost the driver a minimum fare, every road becomes a toll road. If people driving cars wouldn’t accept this, why do people taking public transportation accept fares?”

@chidgey @HerraBRE @dx In London, buses and tube trains are free after 9.30am for pensioners. They're always free for under 10s. Mind, in Luxembourg, public transport is free to everyone at any time.

@chidgey @HerraBRE @dx Smarter ticketing also helps. When I lived in London, it cost me £4.30 to commute into London and £4.30 back again (£43 per week). If I needed a bus as part of the commute, that's an extra £1.65 each way (£16 per week). But... If I paid with the same bank card, I'd pay a total of £58.50 per week (and never any more, thanks to the price cap). So any journeys on the weekend, or a cheeky weeknight, were... free.

@dx @clive As someone that works in public transport, that is certainly an interesting view. If we can get more people out of their cars more often, and onto public transport we can free up the roads for those that really need to be on them, and reduce pollution at the same time. Also buses can more easily run to time, which should encourage more usage. It’s a win-win all round.
