When I was a kid I use to play RuneScape and Habbo Hotel but soon I found out one could run their own 'private servers' and from that moment on the official games where no fun :blobcatgiggle: Now years later many of the same mechanics are used in Unreal when it comes to datatables and such :flan_laugh: Wish I had the many tutorials and free courses when I was younger. Not sure if I had done the unnecessary study then

Some kids have locks on the cookie jars but we had locks on the router :flan_laugh: :flan_hacker: I always wanted to port forward so I could use my own PC as a server but dad didn't like that at all, he was scared our network would be hacked within a few sec :blobcatgiggle: So that was 'our battle' at home, not about the cookie jar but about the web access

@stux I'm pretty chilled about that stuff. If my kids can show a need, I'm all for setting up a VM for them and doing any necessary security and port forwarding

@stux I'm 42 and my mum is still doesn't believe I can work in ICT πŸ˜†It's why I've vowed never to be like that. Plus, it's better to be across what they're doing than have them break stuff behind my back

@stux I guess if I had a bit more knowledge when I was a kid, I would put the lock on my home's Wi-Fi network, as my parents weren't that good with computers. :blobcatdevil:

@stux Your dad was right. I watched a video by a guy running a honeypot maybe 10-15 years ago that showed would-be hackers sniffing around within seconds. A good firewall does help.

@stux At some point in my early teens, I became our "network admin" managing our router and WiFi. I used this power to play some games with friends, and I feel like it helped set me on a nice path to where I am today:Learning networking fundamentals to build a better home and homelab network

@stux Back in the day when getting PCs infected with viruses was a fairly routine thing, whenever one of the kids got infected I pulled their network connection, to be reconnected once I had found time to clean the viruses from their machine. The first time it took me two days to get round to sorting it out, the second time four days, the third time a week, and there wasn't a fourth time. The idea of being without internet for a fortnight next time was enough incentive to encourage them to take care not to download and install viruses.A people solution to a people problem which most people would have, erroneously in my view, thrown technology at. πŸ˜‚
