@Riamu Also the smoke from the fire is insanely more harmful for you to breathe in. We handle a lot of (gay) tesla product at my work and after a fire we had to have fire training refreshers and the fire fighter said if a tesla ever caught fire to just leave and don't bother trying to put it out just go upwind from it and leave it

@Riamu Not sure you can even put those out with water, I could be misremembering but I'm pretty sure that type of fire would need dry powder or a type of foam. We had a car light on fire due to both fuel leak and electrical malfunction and the fire fighter said we were right to not use a nearby high pressure washer to try to put it out because the water likely would have carried and spread the fire. Very cool!

Water will not put it out. It'll get oxygen form splitting the water, I assume, and burn even better. I tried to put a nail through old but still somewhat charged laptop LiPo and throw it in a bucket full of water. It kept on burning under the water for minutes. The fumes ware really nasty. The smell made me run away and probably my neighbors wanted to kill me that day. Interesting fact - I had another one with zero charge. That one did not burn at all.

@Foil_Hatter @Riamu Yes, shipping lines are now enforcing a maximum charge percentage on garbage electric vehicles after an entire vessel full of expensive cars burnt for days out at sea because an electrical car fire :) imagine its a heat wave and your electrical car (if you are gay and get one) just bursts in to a giant fireball and keeps reigniting for a long time this is so good for the environment and people :)

Well, I don't think they are totally gay - I love the idea of having less moving parts, less complexity and less service needed. But to the point - did you perhaps meant minimum charge? Maximum would mean more energy for reaction... Minimum would mean less energy. Batteries don't catch fire when they are empty (unless being charged).

@Foil_Hatter @Riamu I meant the term maximum charge in the context that if an EV has over a certain percentage of charge in the battery it will not be accepted for shipment. This was a direct result of the length and intensity of burn over the last vessel that went up in flames. It was called the Felicity Ace if you're interested in reading about it. I think EVs are incredibly gay but perhaps maybe I just like the feel of driving a car and not hovering around in a gay little battery powered bubble. Tesla's fart at u in cabin.

Naah, I don't agree, there are pluses to EVs. Even if you want to go all prepper post-apoc, there are still pluses to electric. You can make electricity from anything - wind, solar, water, turning a crank, running a generator on steam, gas, gasoline, lpg, wahtever. If you have gasoline engine - that thing comes only from long dead dinosaurs. You could go bioethanol, but servicing would be issue. With EVs you don't need oil changes. You don't need to look after 1000 moving parts in the engine. EVs are quite nice thing as whole. It's gay people that are making them gay for financial benefit (in case of sales people) or moral-fagging (in case of activists, politicians and other fags) reasons.

@Foil_Hatter @Riamu You make some good points about the potential of electricity powered vehicles but they are lost on the fact that electrical vehicle production, like gasoline vehicle production, is an industry. They will not be (and already are not) any more reliable than gasoline powered vehicles, maintenance does not disappear it's just takes a different form and I would rather be able to do running maintenance on my own vehicle than have to swap out a $2000 lithium battery every 12 months after a devastatingly hot summer and cold winter cycle rapes it like it does your phone battery. The increased demand of electricity production to power these homobiles will significantly increase your cost of living domestically too. It's just very forced and fake and gay I have driven various EV's and have not been impressed by a single one to date. Plus there is no benefit whatsoever to alleged emissions reduction- they're made in the same coal powered factories as petrol vehicles and the minerals required for their production are still mined with diesel powered equipment. It's all very fake and gay tbh

Oof. "Contrary to speculations in the media, it is unknown whether an electric car caused the initial fire" - really? They could not tell if battery ignited? They have shit ton of sensors in the battery and logs for it. They could tell if the heat started form inside or outside and from which cell module exactly. Typical vehicle BMS has a 12 channel monitoring chips, so basically 12 batteries per thermal senor. Even if they don't read temperatures, they have individual cell voltages, so they could extrapolate. I'd rather assume they did not want to find which battery is the one that started the fire. that or BMS failed and there ware no logs or it was designed half-assed - that happens too.

@Foil_Hatter @Riamu That vessel was abandoned and burned, uninhibited, out at sea for about 6 days and lithium burns at a little under 4000 degrees Fahrenheit, I am not sure how much of anything was salvageable, but I work in this field and can tell you it's not common my experience for an entire ship to just burn down like that

That's not entirely true. In many cases it is, but for example I3 factory is self-sustained with solar, power requirement-wise. Sure, you have to compensate solar with traditional, but I'd say go with nuclear not coal. If you don't live in earthquake / tsunami zone or allow Russians to run your plant, it will not explode by itself. From the household standpoint - my solar panels generate more than I can use. Electric company literally pays me money. So I disagree about that. Electric generation should be more decentralized + lots of big nuclear plants. EU sort of shit our shared pants with switching those off.Maintenance - well.. No, it's really much less shit to maintain in EV. Brake pads, tires, brake fluid and once per 10 years you can flush the coolant from the heat pump probably. No oil, no water pump, no coils and high voltage cables, no heat damage to manifolds, no darn EGRs. And if anytihng brakes, I can service EV. I can't make new part for combustion engine at home. Lots of big precision machinery needed. To fix EV drive trian you need multimeter, oscilloscope, soldering iron and a pair of brain cells. OK, some reading and experience too. So it's half gay and half fake, but it can all be fixed and solved. EV is the future. Only thing that will never be solved with EVs is the fun of driving a stick-shift on a RWD with oversized gasoline engine and no computer assistance on a slippery surface. That is unfortunate and that is gay. But for practical usage - sorry, EV will win. Let the car manufacturers perfect the designs for as long as they have done it with combustion engines and most of today's problems, including exploding batteries, will seem rather dated.

@Foil_Hatter @Riamu The argument you present for home repair and maintenance on EV vehicles can be applied to petrol vehicles. You don't have to be able to make parts at home but you can effectively carry out repairs and maintenance, everything can be done at home with maybe only the addition of a hydraulic press and a welder if you have enough motivation and critical thinking skills. I have never needed to take any of my cars to a garage and feel I have a better understanding of the 1000 moving parts in an engine and a non electric driveline than I do in an electrical one. Maybe I'm just stuck to an individual sense of satisfaction that you get from making all of those moving parts function in perfect unison and maybe there's a higher ratio of effort vs reward. I just find them, in their current form, to be obnoxious and not fun and so already riddled with issues that they're off-putting.

A modern electric vehicle would not make a good apocalypse vehicle. Time and resources it would take to charge through solar or wind is cost prohibitive and time consuming. Using a generator may not work because it’s output waveform and most EVs have an interface or regulating system that allows the vehicle to accept or deny a charge. The amount of fuel you’ll burn to recharge through a generator will probably be more than just filling an IC vehicle anyway. Range will always be an issue especially in rural areas, environmental conditions have a greater effect on batteries too. Plug-in hybrids or a fuel sipping internal combustion engine are still your better options in a SHTF scenario, or even just a rural area. EVs have a place, it’s just not THE solution.

@pyrate @Foil_Hatter @Riamu Ironically enough with the dogged advocation for moving away from fossil fuel powered vehicles to electrical ones, it was a mineral and electrical component shortage that drove the price of used vehicles through the roof and not even just on exotic or sports cars. Dude you have no idea. Brand new vehicles can sit in a holding yard for over a year before they are sold and have a compliance plate slapped on that deems their year of production as the current year and not when they were actually made because the fitment of the jew plate constitutes completion of production. Dealers are also legally allowed to wind back the odometer to 0 if they want by filling out a form. Most car and truck salesmen I have encountered are not human and would throw their own mothers in to the deal so long as you signed a purchase contract (subject to finance of course)

It's a good law in principle... I have some analog oscilloscopes - one in particular came with a book that included a diagram of every thing it can do - every thing about the circuit board within it and even a crash course on RF diagnostics. 50s-80s spawned some decent tech, even if it was bulky. It was built with the concept that all of society may vanish in a few minutes and whoever managed to survive would need that info. Badly.

@pyrate @Foil_Hatter @Riamu I used to work for a brand new semi dealer and a lot of the trucks that passed through me were old enough that they needed surface rust repair and cosmetic touch up on the chassis rails and an extra 10 hours pre delivery time to rectify in cabin noises and vibrations caused by weathered plastics that anyone would get legitimate rage over if they experienced it in a "brand new" truck that cost so much they could have bought a house for the same price. When it comes to actual cars I won't buy anything newer than 15 years old and like with anything it always pays to do research before you buy anything. Plus a willingness to learn (if you don't already know) how to fix or replace things which present common issues in the car you want to buy will save you a lot of stress later on. I have 8 :)

Let's get out in front and make TND the next Earth Saving fad. I think I need another hour or two of sleep before I actually start the day.

That's actually what I tell to people who ask "which is the most reliable car" - well, my dude, just look at what rebels mount their machine guns on in Africa and Middle East. If reliability is your goal - pick that.

@pyrate @Foil_Hatter @Riamu If you really enjoy doing that and think that dealing with retarded mong brained niggers who own the old imports won't kill your love for the work do it, Godspeed. If you really enjoy it as a hobby I would reconsider as truly retarded people ruin everything :)

That's a bit more shenanigans than I'd expect. At least in electronics we do not have rust on PCBs and degraded plastics. We do cheat with certifications though. Everybody does cut the corners. Well, I try not to for my projects, but some customers want to save even on compliance tests. I've herd multiple times brainfarts like "Well, CE (EU's version of FCC) is self signed, so it does not have to be tested. It's like a promise that everything is fine." - you asshat, what in the world do you base your promise on if you do not do the measurements? Every time I come across someone like that I just think how good it is that I'm not a doctor. And my next thought usually is - yeah.. but probably there are doctors with same attitude. And that road brings to a dark, dark place.

The last thought I'll have on this is exactly how precious our technicals will be if a collapse were to happen. Guard your babes carefully and well, if you can avoid it. Don't go anywhere while the urbanites are killing each other.

@Foil_Hatter @pyrate @Riamu I agree, a good portion of what is wrong with the world is just people who are not good at the (sometimes) very important jobs they have.

I'll take a chance to disagree again. I've herd it quite many times. And I have had totally inadequate customers that made me hate the project. But I have never started to hate the skillet or the field as whole. And still, if I want to "reset" my self from building customers hardware, I just take a break and build something for myself. So it must be individual thing.

@Foil_Hatter @pyrate @Riamu I kind of agree with you there but there is always the possibility to burn yourself out by not having the opportunity to stop and build something for yourself, especially if the business is your own and you are required to chase the terrible customers and their shitty business. I suppose it has very much to do with how each individual deals with those things

I have had those thoughts, but then I just tell myself - dude, finish the thing, send them off, sleep whole day, write huge bill, build a gadget for yourself. I guess there's always a chance to snap at some point. And I guess you'll never know before it actually happens. Well, if you see news about former engineer leveling half of whatever country with homemade nuke - you'll know I was wrong and kind of gay. 😆

I think it needs special chemicals, normal powder or foam extinguisher will not work on it. They both are designed to cut off oxygen form fuel. If I am not mistaken, there's Oxygen in the battery chemistry, that gets freed in heat process and can then burn with the other products.

@Kaspa @Riamu You can put them out with water, but it takes a lake of water and it's the stupid way. Water makes it worse in any normal scenario because of the lithium/water reaction.
