       @rabbijill The hospitals in private hands make a good argument that their first duty is to make profits for shareholders, and maternity wards and birthing centers are the most expensive part of their budget because they must be fully staffed 24/7. Mothers and babies can go into crisis any time. This argues for the government funding rural birthing centers thru rural colleges. Is this a possibility? Things are terrible in the US.

       @thepoliticalcat @rabbijill Best argument I've heard in a while for nationalizing the health care industry. If you can't say your first priority is restoring the health of those who come to you for care, you're in the wrong line of business...

       @toxtethogrady @rabbijill I think you need to be realistic. Nationalizing health care in a country this big and complex is highly unlikely. There are multiple different vehicles thru which the Government delivers health care. Medicaid for the disabled; Medicare for the elderly; VA for veterans; Indian Health Program for Native people; and state-, county-, and community level networks of health care centers and hospitals.
